I wanted to make an ~$600 Arc B580 'entry'-level build for me and the kids to play with.

But with Arc B580 overhead issues, I asked myself what it would cost to go from Ryzen 5000 to Ryzen 7000.  I estimate it would be an extra $200 dollars which, imo, puts it more in the 'Mid'-tier pricing.

(See my two builds below.)

Is the extra $200 worth it your opinion?  (I know 'it depends on what I want to do' but just in your opinion is it worth it? Why or why not?)  Also, please critique build with any other suggestions.

  • Arc B580 ($250)

Yes. With some of my other posts it can be confusing...  but short story is I'm not very good at this.

I'm trying to build two gaming machines: One 'entry'-level for the kids and one more 1440p at ultra-settings for me.

I got spooked with all the 'buy now' talk regarding the tariffs stuff and I took advantage of some black friday sales so I have in my possession the majority of both the Ryzen 5 5500 build and the Ryzen 5 7600X build (though critically, I have no GPUs yet).  The idea was I was going to use B580 (when I can get one) with the 5500 and maybe an RTX 4080 with the 7600X.  I tucked the hardware away for Christmas presents and have been waiting for GPUs to become available since.

However, since my purchases the recommendations for the B580 have been retracted/amended and RTX 50s have been announced throwing my plans in turmoil.

I believe I'm just going to hold off on a more powerful gaming rig until more is known about the RTX 50s performance and maybe more availability with the AM5 X3D CPUs.  I'll just risk the future regarding tariffs and pricing.

However, I still want to build a 'good value' gaming rig for the kids and I to have some fun with.

So....  I'm trying to figure out what hardware to keep and what to return...  I know...  it's kind of a stupid situation I got myself into.  😐

I personally don't expect anything to change that drastically, especially when in US politics most of the cabinet replacement from Biden to Trump is still up in the air. Its more of a warning within weeks or months to come, if the stance doesn't change at all from what we have seen.

But yeah i say that the upgrade is kind of worthwhile. 5500 is a throwaway Zen 3, it has better memory controller but the cut cache makes it performs more like a Ryzen 5 3600. I'm looking forward to drop that out of my machine personally, and for your case the Arc's driver overhead should be contained with that quick and dirty CPU upgrade.

Well that actually makes a lot more sense than just seeing the two posts in their rawness.

Okay, you didn't do anything that can't be fixed.

7600X = excellent CPU for your 1440p machine.  Pair it with anything 4070Super or 7900GRE for max settings.  Now, you may have trouble getting a 50 series or 90 series, so temper the expectations.  If you find a good deal on current gen (40 series, 79 series), grab it.  They're both going to get DLSS4 and FSR respectively, so they won't be worthless at the very least.

5500 = not a fan, tho it isn't terrible. I would have gone 5600, personally.    Can you return the 5500?  If not, no problem.

Now, what exactly do you need still for both builds?

Yes, I can return the 5500.  I can technically return any of it for a couple weeks.  (In fact, I was kind of thinking of returning half of the hardware and abandoning a second build until 50s and X3D AM5 chips become more available.)

As far as what I don't have: I don't have any GPUs yet.  And I currently only have the one PSU and the one case.  Otherwise I got what is outlined above.

You don't think the 7600X would be worth pairing with the B580?
