Help with decision. Rog ally x or gaming laptop

Go to solution Solved by tiranobracitos,

Hi! I believe the Ally X is the strongest handheld in the market for the time being, until the new Z2 Extreme chips get released; nevertheless I think you'll get a lot of mileage out of it. I wouldn't worry too much about performance because adjusting expectations and settings you'll be able to play most if not all games for the foreseeable future with it (and that's true to some extent for the gaming laptop); but you'll have a MUCH better battery life, lower wattage and portability. Do not underestimate the weight, size and heat of a typical gaming laptop + charger.

The only scenario where I think a laptop is better if you're going to do anything else with the device than gaming; in that case having a one stop solution with a proper keyboard and bigger screen is better. In that scenario a Legion Go + keyboard seems interesting as a concept; or maybe a minisforum v3 with a controller, too

But just for gaming? You cannot do much better than the Ally X, IMHO

First time posting on this forum so apologies if in wrong section.

Firstly I live in UK if that makes any difference with what I need help with.

Anyway looking at getting back into pc gaming instead of console, to rejoin friends that have already made the switch.

However ideally need the portability of a laptop/gaming handheld due to work related travel so a proper desktop isn't an option.

So reckon I can afford £800ish so that's what led me to look into Rog Ally X.

However is there a laptop/other handheld that can outperform it for around the same price point? I'm struggling to do a comparison.

Any help would be amazing!

With extreme ease.

Depends on sales but usually not really sort of.

We need more info. What games are you playing? Is 800 pounds the HARD limit? Is the main concern max performance in a relavily compact formfactor or is the handheld thing part of the decision making?

Thank you for the responses, you have helped me get a little closer to making my mind up and it's swinging heavily towards the ally x.

But just to answer some of the questions.

Current big games I plan to play is Helldivers 2 & boulder gate 3 with a couple of indy games thrown in (however the names of them escape me right now) as these are the ones my friends are playing.

My limit currently is around £800, potentially could push to £900.

Performance I guess is the main point (not sure when I will be able to afford to save up for a more powerful system), ideally want to be as future proof as my budget allows, realise in the tech world at my price point it's not long if I want to be able to keep playing the newest big games at as close to highest quality as possible but still.

I do plan on using the ally x as a "laptop" in odd occasions but would have it hooked up to a monitor and have keyboard and mouse for those occasions, which I believe works like a laptop would.

I'm not pulling the trigger until Sunday so any additional help or thoughts are very much appreciated.
