READ ME: Why does my PC keep rebooting when I play a game?

So I built a new gaming rig, but every time I open a game, it will run for a bit then randomly restart the entire pc. (meaning it shuts off and then is immediately back on). I don't have a hardware issue because I swapped components out and it still did the same thing. I even tried to look at Event Viewer to see if there were any errors or critical errors, but all I found was the error of my PC shutting off unexpectedly. The game I was playing is called Minecraft Java, now you may say that my components were overheating but I have a good cooler in my pc and both CPU and GPU were operating at 40 degrees Celsius, (pretty cool), I really wanna play my game so please help this is serious.

I use a intel core i7-860 (first gen but still works good) and a gtx 660 ti gpu, i have 8gb of ddr3 1600mhz ram, and my power supply is a esgaming es-700 (700w psu), and a gigabyte ga-h55m s2v motherboard, with an uphere tower CPU cooler, it works fine on everything else it just restarts my PC when I try to play a game.

That power supply is actually a fire hazzard. I wouldn't use that if someone payed me.

Your crashes might be due to the poor PSU, it can't handle anything above idle / desktop use.

I might be wrong.. But I would swap that out either way.

the power supply never got really hot, its fan is really quiet and it seems to be working very good, the thing is... i don't have money for a new psu... i have a 650w cooler master psu but it has a shorting issue, maybe I try and switch them out? (I'm pretty sure the reason why it was shorting is because I had it connected to a bad motherboard before this so it should be fine?) please tell me if I'm right

the 650w cooler master psu was shorting because of a bad connection to the motherboard I think it may be fine now if I try it in my build (I just don't like it cus its fan spins at full speed when I first turn it on and it is very loud)

It has nothing to do with it being hot or loud for it to be a shit PSU and causing crashes.

If you can return it and pick up a MSI MAG A550BN that would be ideal, even if its not the problem.

I can't tell you what caused the short, I dont know what it did or you did.

the power supply was connected to a bad motherboard that was touching a metal piece in my case, which is totally my fault, I'm gonna try and hook it up to my old psu and see if it works, if not then idk what to do because I don't have the original box for the esgaming one, I may just end up buying the msi psu if my cooler master one doesn't work

Crossing fingers!  Keep me updated 🙂

We recommend the ABN series from MSI multiple times a week here on LTT for budget builds.

Its a solid, reliable PSU with 5 year warranty.

question, 550 is not really enough for my build, especially because I will be hooking up a elgato capture card and a few USB expansion cards to my motherboard, so I wanted to know if the Thermaltake Smart Series 700W SLI psu is a good option or not, its non modular (which I don't mind) but its 700w which should be just a stretch from the power I need for this gaming rig. and I will keep you updated man thanks for the help 😄

Your rig will draw at most 400W, even with capture cards. 550 is definitely enough.

Also, congrats on getting hardware that old to work at all. Nvidia dropped support for the 600 series mid-2021 and I ditched my first gen intel platform a few years ago when I upgraded the TV it was attached to

The MSI A550BN is plenty enough for your system.

Dont get a Thermaltake Smart Series... If it has SLI in its name you know its old tech.. That PSU is also quite shit.

So you are stingy but want crap tier PSU's that has a high chance of destroying more of your system so you have to spend more money?

I know its a big ask to maybe double the amount of money spent but its worth it for a PSU.

Never cheap out on a PSU.

The MSI ABN series is really the cheapest we can go without going into dangerous and quite explody PSU territory.

We also like to use the PSU Tierlist.

https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/

C:Tier is fine for budget builds.  Anything on tier E:Avoid or Tier F:Avoid you stay away from.

And if its not even listed lik the EsGame... Don't even look at it.

lol i use it as a streaming/gaming rig (I stream on youtube and make youtube content as well) and so far the first gen i7 has surprised me a lot, and the gtx 660 ti is just enough paired with the I7 to play my  favorite games at 200fps and above 🙂

Tier F:Avoid

Oh, it's even better it's "Tier F: Replace immediately" as in you would be better off ripping those out than risk one more day.
Partner of mine was complaining about very similar issues, I popped the case and saw a Gamemax 700 PSU in there and just pulled the plug. Swapped in an old EVGA 550 I had laying around and it fixed all her problems.
....well, until she got a new C5 TV and needed a GPU that could output 4k144 at all. So I went to ebay, found a nice deal on a 2060 Super (which fit in the power budget, which I got her for xmas. Interestingly, the seller didn't send a 2060S, they sent a 2070S which unfortunately did NOT fit in the power budget. That was a weird experience all around
