Does it make sense to use a HDD in a 2.5" enclosure or should a SDD be the only option? I see that SEAGATE BARRACUDA PRO 1TB (ST1000LM049) costs about the same as CRUCIAL MX500 500GB (CT500MX500SSD1) and both seem to have the same warranty, which would you choose?

It makes sense or not kinda depends on what you need it for.

Example : If you need a portable drive, then it makes sense to use enclosure.

me, if I don't really really need that extra 400 something gb, I'd go SSD.
Iunno, after tasting moving 3TBs worth of datas to a portable ssd..... I don't think I can stomach to doing it to&from HDD.

I am not asking if it makes sense to use an enclosure, but if it makes sense to use a HDD or a SSD in an enclosure. I understand the difference in speed, but more space can be useful.

Do you intend on moving large file on/off this often? If you do you will appreciate the extra speed that SSDs provide. But, if it's just for infrequent backups I'd deviate toward HDD.

Also, If you intend to travel with it a lot you have to be more careful with HDDs
