A few years ago we built a sick portable storage machine to help us handle footage and edit when travelling for shows like CES or Computex, it just had one fatal flaw - being too heavy! In this video, we show you how we replaced that $20,000 large Portable NAS with a brand new, smaller, and lighter machine based on the Minisforum MS-01.

Im running the machine as well, the on board intel VPro does everything that nanoKVM does, but without taking it with you. in my opinion that nanokvm is just a waste of space to take with. just hook the left 2.5 gbit port up to the 1gbe port of the 10gbe switch and let vpro run through that way! 🙂

You can turn it on and off, use a connection to see what it's doing, and interact with it as well!

Too bad there doesn't seem to be an easy, reliable, field-undoable way to have the TrueNAS kernel not glom onto the integrated graphics so it could be passed to the VM instead... If that PCIe x8 slot was free you could have used a dual port 10 gig NIC and done without the switch (in theory, anyway).

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Ditto

I have mine running headless as a proxmox server. I've flashed the vPro AMT with MeshCommander and can do everything the nanoKVM does with no fuss.

What is the machine that Linus is upgrading from? I can't seem to find it anywhere, the serial number doesn't particularly match anything either, and there's no branding I saw on the case. Was this a completely custom solution?

They featured it a a year or two ago in one of their videos for a portable nas. I believe it was based on an asrockrack server motherboard.

Hi,

we bought 5 MS-01 in June/July last year to use them as proxmox server for small offices.

The huge problem is, they die. All 5.

after 4 month of running them we shutdown 2 of them to send it to a customer and they simple do nothing any more.
If you disconnect the power cable for more than 1h they are simple dead.(after 1-5 month of running them).

there are some customer with the same problem.

as mobile NAS they are the worst. Wondering why they still selling them. Minisforum has no explanation for the problem.

Yep, own the MS-A1 and it has problems :

  • The way they mount the internal drives actually warps and bends the NVME drives.
  • The heat sink/fan doesn't apply even pressure to the CPU so it quickly jumps to 80-85c when idle.

I wish they had used standard mounting points to at least allow me to put on another heat sink.

Posted a review on their website citing the issues only to see they removed it. So buyer beware.
