Budget (including currency): None

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mid-tier games

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): No parts yet, just have the old imac shell.

Biggest hurdles are getting a mobo small enough, making a new I/0 shield, and putting a 60hz screen in it.

You will probably need a mini ITX motherboard. Should be able to get a smaller GPU in there also,  but you may need a riser to make it work. What price range for parts are you looking at?

For screen, you should do measurement, go on panelook.com or some similar sites to find the right pick, then look on eBay. Some laptops may use the same size  and you either buy “Replacement parts" or buy a old one and salvage the screen.

As for motherboard set all i can say is good luck cuz it's no where near MODERN STANDARDS

What is your plan for handling heat? Any AIOs or fans planned? Or are you just going to try to use pretty low powered hardware?

Yeah nothing crazy powerful

Maybe a ryzen 7, 16gb ram, 1070 for gpu. There were two fans in it, so i may try for 3, plus the cpu cooler. Once i get it built ill run temp checks and circle back to alternative options if i need to

Do you already have a 1070? A 4060 actually be a better option if you find a good deal used. Way lower TDP (so less heat) but performance is better than 1070 and has access to DLSS. I picked up a 4060 for 220 usd on fb market place a few weeks ago. 5700x3d is 203 USD on amazon right now.

Maybe something like this list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xvskXR
