To whom this may concern!

For context I do high-end gaming, video editing as a job, and want to get into Blender.

I've ordered a 9900x but wondering if I should cancel it. Apparently the x3d is amazing at gaming and graphic intense stuff. So Im thinking of rather getting a 9800x3d. The problem is it's 8 cores instead of 12 cores. Is the x3d that much of a deal breaker to sacrifice those cores and rather have 8 cores?

For reference I play games like Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Silent Hill 2 Remake, going to play the new Indiana Jones, The Last of Us Part 1 and will definitely be getting GTA 6 when it comes to PC.

Also I want to do 3d in the future and I am a video editor.

Thanks in advance.

That depends if the apps you'll use allocate and use that many cores/threads.

If you prefer gaming performance or multi-core performance, if the video editor can utilize GPU or not. If having few less cores in Blender won't be big deal because you use Nvidia GPU.

And finally, if you want to pay the 200% inflated price of 9800x3D, because it's bought out by scalpers out of stock and re-selled for almost double the price:

For what it's worth you won't feel great difference between the two, the x3D chip is just current "bleeding edge" when it comes to gaming.

The 9900x is already considerably fast, since it released alongside 9800x3D.

Another thing that might draw lines closer from 9900x to 9800x3D, is the fact that while cores aren't everything, they certainly are something, every little background task, program or whatever, may less likely impact performance because with high core count CPUs there's many "free" cores to choose from.

On top of that if you heavily multitask or generally have more things open at once that requires some CPU power, the higher threaded 9900x has that wider spread that can cover things without slowing down other things.

The final choice is yours of course, the 9800x3D is very fast in gaming, and on average yields more fps that separate it on the gaming benchmark charts noticeably.

Alternatively, if the 7900/7900x are cheaper you could get those instead for example.

Awesome thanks! You've given me a lot to think about ! What if I get like a RTX 4070, will the x3d be that much help? I'm on an RTX 3060 12GB currently but going to upgrade the gpu sometime next year, once the CPU is sorted.

That depends what program or game, 9800x3D could be quite overkill if you're using mid-range GPU on average

Well, 9800x3D is the best gaming CPU, so it always will be better, but that doesn't make the other CPUs obsolete.

Having a 13900KS, which has considerably more multi-core performance than a 9800x3d, I would still pick the 9800x3d over the 9900x, simply because you won't have to deal with 2 CCDs, and the fact the 9800x3d can do 24,000 CB R23 points is pretty much enough for 90% of people. There are not many use cases where you would need 12 or more CPU cores.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks!
