I recently upgraded my 3070 to a 4070 Super because I wanted more FPS in Cyberpunk 2077. But I realized that I am still being bottlenecked by my 5800X. I really didnt get much improvement in FPS. Went from an average of like...50-55 fps on the 3070 to 55-58 fps on the 4070 Super. On the 3070 my GPU was only getting about 80-90 utilization. And on the 4070 Super, utilization was even less.

At my local retailer, they are selling 7700X CPU combo deals, with motherboard and ram included.

But for slightly less, I can pick up a used 5800X3D.

What do you guys think I should do?

CP2077 is a pretty GPU heavy game, and it's weird for you to only get a ~3FPS increase even if you were playing at 1080p. For example in this review, TPU uses 5800X and 2080 Ti (~3070) to 3090 (~4070S) is ~33%: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3090-ti-founders-edition/11.html

If you still have your 3070 I would first try to debug, i.e. is this marginal increase in FPS seen across other titles that are similarly demanding as CP2077?

Check other settings like XMP, ReBar, etc.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I already sold my 3070.

Also that article is from 2022 when the game launched. I think with the new Phantom Liberty update, and all the changes they've made, the game demands more from your CPU and GPU.

But Im certain Im experiencing a CPU bottleneck, both from GPU utilization and frametime graphs as the GPU waits for the CPU to catch up.

How about a brand new 5700X3D?

yeah, but apparently its the cpu that's the issue so a gpu benchmark is of limited value here.

still that upgrade is pointless as it'll probably net like 2-5% gains *if lucky* and i also think something is off with ops system they should have had no issues with CP and a 3070 to begin with. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Something else is wrong with your build. Cyberpunk is not that heavy on the CPU in my experience. I'd be concerned that maybe your ram is not running at DOCP speeds or something else is wrong with the build given the results.

Make sure the ram is at 3200 or 3600 (whatever it's rated for), ensure the CPU isn't overheating, and so on.

I should clarify, I'm running the game at 1440p with ray tracing minimum settings (the initial minimum ray tracing preset).

My RAM is running at higher speeds (confirmed in the BIOS). Latest BIOS as well.

I am most definitely being bottlenecked by my CPU haha.

All 3070 and 4070 benchmarks I've looked at for the most recent update, using the same CPU, matches the performance I'm seeing.

Its a definite CPU bottleneck.

But I appreciate the feedback everyone. This has helped me to just cement my decision that I should upgrade to AM5 at this point. '

Edit: Another way that you can be certain an Nvidia GPU is being bottlenecked by your CPU is through the use of DLSS. If you get no noticeable increase in performance between the different DLSS settings like I am (for example the lowest, Ultra Performance and the highest yield pretty much the same FPS), then you can be sure its a CPU bottleneck. The GPU cant push out frames faster because no matter what its waiting on the CPU to catch up. Temps are great (60 degrees average on both CPU and GPU), RAM running at max speeds, and tried with both resizable BAR on and off.

In one of the most demanding scenes in the game thus far, Im still only getting 75-80% utilization on a 4070 Super (performance stats in the top left of attached image). There is still 20% more headroom I am not getting. Theres probably gains of 10 fps that are being left on the table here, because my CPU is too slow for the GPU to push up there.

Anyway thanks again all!
