Hey everyone,

I’ve recently upgraded my PC, and I’m encountering some unusual performance issues. Previously, my setup was:

  • CPU: Intel i9-9900KS
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080

With this setup, I could play most games on high settings while also watching 720p YouTube videos without much issue. Watching anything above 1080p wasn’t smooth due to buffering and stuttering, where the video would cut out, but the audio kept playing.

After upgrading to:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5
  • Storage: NVMe PCIe 4.0 drives
  • GPU: Same RTX 3080
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X870E AORUS PRO ICE
  • RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30, optimized for AMD EXPO
  • OS: Fresh Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (Version 10.0.19045, Build 19045)
  • BIOS Version: F3f

I’ve noticed a significant downgrade in multitasking performance. While gaming itself runs almost flawlessly (aside from two crashes with memory access errors), any attempt to multitask is laggy. For example:

  1. Watching YouTube videos at even 720p while gaming now results in constant stuttering and freezes.
  2. Switching browser windows or changing Discord channels can take several seconds to respond.

What’s confusing is that the gaming performance is still great (until the crashes). I’m wondering if the 9800X3D is less capable at multitasking compared to my old 9900KS, or if there’s some underlying configuration issue in the bio, or amd driver in my new setup.

Here’s my DxDiag with system details for further context in case its needed.
Not had a AMD system in 20+ years so not a clue about these sort of things.

You did a fresh install of windows, correct?  Not a reset.

What's your Internet like?  Updated drivers for lan/WiFi?

Regardless, under no circumstances with a healthy system should you experience the two points you mentioned above. Is this a brand new install of Windows with the latest chipset driver? Made any modifications to Windows post install?

Since both issues involve the Internet, curious if his ISP as well as drivers.

Hi thanks for a quick reply.

Yes a total fresh install of windows, didnt even use the same harddrive. Windows was downloaded from Microsoft and onto a usb driver,

internet speed should be 1000/1000

the bluetooth and internet drivers i had to find on the motherbaord that had the same name as mine but not "ice" as that one had more driver support then the ice version

All drivers I could find on the Gigabyte's mothebroard device and AMD has been downloaded and installed, I had an issue where the Nvidia crashed mid install so had to do a reinstall of that but other then that, no obvious faults,  Im worried if it can be memory related or x3d related? (refering to the issues mentioned in the 7000x3d serie with xbox gamebar, memory)

Even a potato PC shouldn't stutter playing 720p video, so the issue is likely not the CPU

Which is even confirmed with the great gaming performance

Are you on wired network or WiFi? What's the result of a Speedtest run? Which browser are you using?

That's terrible ping for wired, and even bad for wireless.

You should be sub 20ms.

For Youtube vids, try different browsers, see if it makes a difference. Disable all plugins, and try to enable or disable hardware accel.

Am on a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (laptop) and I can play a full 4K Youtube video without any stuttering.

13ms download, and 400mbps internet.

First off, your issue with the 9900ks was your terrible Internet. Nothing was wrong with that build.

Second, the issues you're having with the 9800x3d is slightly unstable ram probably. Just turn off expo, go to JEDEC speeds, see if the issues go away. If they do, you'll have to manually time your ram.

Thanks ill try,  i got another fun issue tho,  when i run heavy games like Cyberpunk 2077, Avatar the frontiers, Horizon forbidden wests,  and say i hold down W to run forward, then decides to stop, and release W,  the characther can be stuck running forward, if i try to stop that with a A or S to, it either starts to strafe/reverse or stops.   thats annoying as seven hells.  can that shit also be memory related  or have i just bought the worst shit there is?

Regarding the internet  the ISP is going to have a tech look into it,  been running more tests and the ping is everywhere between 20 and 7178.

I turned off EXPO and ran the mem on standard 4,8ghz and the same lag or what to call it came back after 1 day and even worse in GTA5 so went back to bios and activated EXPO again. So again, in GTA 5, cant control/stear anything all of a sudden anyone got any clues what so ever, whats the issue?   Windows? Bios?

To be honest these all sound like three totally unrelated issues (Youtube lagging, game crashes, and control problems). For the control problems, have you tried a different input device?

Gaming PC: Ryzen 5 5600 :: Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC :: MSI B550-VC :: WD SN750 :: NH-D15 :: 32GB DDR4-3200 :: Phanteks Enthoo Pro M TG :: Windows 10

Laptop: Latitude E5440 (i5-4200U, 8GB DDR3-1600, 500GB Sandisk SSD) :: Linux Mint XFCE

Office PC: Optiplex 5090 (i7-10700, 16GB DDR4-2933, Quadro P400, 500GB SSD) :: Windows 10

File and Media Server: Precision 3620 (i5-7500, 16GB DDR4-2133, a bunch of old recert HDDs) :: TrueNas Scale

Web Server: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB RAM, 64GB storage) :: Raspberry Pi OS

Yeah, I'm with Satan, the buggy controls in games is probably a peripherals issue. Unplug everything USB and just plug mouse in one port and the keyboard into a different stack of USB ports (ports on top of one another can share bandwidth

The YT issues are down to ping times. 136ms is insanely high. Do you have a VPN? Is there a hop somewhere that is over wifi? I'd be interested in seeing the results of running "pathping 1.1.1.1" in CMD (blur your home IP address/ don't include the address column)

Can you boot a live linux environment and see if your internet problems persist there?

No i havnt tried other devices, i have tried with a fresh installed moue/keyboard software,  tried without, removed all unkown mice/keyboard in the device manager,  but still same shit.

(dont mind the paper and the cat bed/brush damn cold)
But yeah this video captures the control f*ckery and delays from i press a button to something happen and then it never stops happen

The Internet i have been told by the ISP dis because of a faulty device on their end, that  they are to change as soon as possible   Soooo yeah, until thats done my internet will be really crap, got pings upwards 7000 at times,

But yeah the controls mice/keyboard is driving me nuts, and im dead worried its hardware/bios related some how  ill start move around the usb holes and try other devices up next.

The question is, are the USB issues motherboard or CPU related? I have a feeling they are motherboard related. Otherwise the whole internet would be full of complaints about it.
