I really tried, Apple - iPhone 30-Day Challenge

Linus had mentioned very briefly about fine motor skills. I lack fine motor skills as part of my autism. When using any newer iOS device without a physical home button, I end up swiping into gestures I don't mean to, and often can't figure out how to undo them. I've learned how to swipe so I can get back to the home screen, but even that takes some effort and concentration on my part. My iPhone 6s (my currently daily) has a physical home button, and aside from the fingerprint sensor (which I prefer over face or eye detection) is the only way I can use any device like this. I still struggle sometimes to click the button twice in order to access the currently open apps area, but the ability to FEEL what I'm doing is priceless for someone like me.

In short, I would prefer to stay on iOS, but after the current SE line it seems Apple wants to do fully away with the home button. It's a shame because the only Android phone I'd switch to is between 3 and 4 years old now. My 6s is STILL supported (though this is likely the last year for it) and as much as I hate Apple as a company, I can't deny how amazing a decade of device support is. So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place here, as I don't know what to switch to. For now my sights are set on the current SE line that still have a home button. But unfortunately I'm part of a very small market that isn't profitable to support. That's the problem with modern tech, it sometimes has such a broad focus, it leaves out other market segments.

Thankfully in my case, it’s just my handwriting that is trash, and equally so in both hands. Parents gave up on getting decent handwriting out of me after forcing me to write lefty for a month.

Given my iPhone 11 is going on 5 years old, I’ll definitely have to consider soon what side to go to. I’d expect a similarly long lifespan at minimum (I dislike changing devices), though pickings appear to still be few for Android, albeit pickings actually exist, unlike 5 years ago.

Number one reason for me to not buy a base iPhone or plus - the damn 60Hz display. It irritates me so much that I feel claustrophobic. I just can't believe how people like Linus, who's eyes have experienced 500 Hz of refresh rate could even come to use a 60Hz display as their daily driver. Even if you gave me the money, I would totally not buy one, unless it's the Pro or Pro Max version. Rumors suggest the next iPhone 17 base model is going to come with 120 Hz display.

They say it right. Apple does changes, Samsung does innovation (not that Samsung is also that generous for their lower tier products, but definitely not as much as Apple, and other companies exist for a better budget).

I don't even play games which only support 60 fps. Refresh rate is one thing that I can immediately pick up.

Microsoft owns my soul.

Also, Dell is evil, but HP kinda nice.

My most sincere condolences. Your addiction to frames is a horribly expensive one. 🫤

High refresh is certainly a nice to have for me, it’s not super high on my priority list, so I won’t turn up otherwise decent devices to get that refresh rate, or throw a pule of cash to get it.

i daily drove the regular iPhone 15 for the last 5 months and i hate it as much as Linus hates his

the iPhone will go to my dad (he is on an XR) and i am gonna buy a Pixel 9 Pro XL cause they sell for the same price as the regular iPhone 15 in this fucked up country

but if i was in Linus's position i'd probably have an android of choice in my pocket and an iPhone in the other

that's how to can see the (extremely slow) progress on the other side

my last phone had 90HZ and it was so much better than the iPhone, i could actually see what i am scrolling through

So Linus is back on the note 9 again? I wonder when the poor thing is going to get put to rest.

i guess when it's not functional anymore, the thing will split in half before Linus will stop using it

Very nice video, was fun to watch as a Android user who hates Apple devices. Gave me some good insights. When I say "Apple hater", I mean that in a, I am biased against Apple devices, but have never tried that, kinda way.

You know what video I would find helpful and interesting to watch? Recreating the things you liked about iPhone on a Android device.

Something that Linus understandably missed in the review is that the plus point he gave Apple for being more on it with App notifications/permissions.  Is actually a case of the EU making Apple and Google do something for the EU market, and Apple just applying it globally to save dev time/costs.

So it's literally a bonus point they picked up by being lazier/cheaper than Google 😅

Having watched the WAN show and knowing they had filmed the video already, it's much appreciated to see LTT refilming certain sections after viewer's suggestion.

I've also had the issue with iOS 18 with the volume randomly going to maximum volume. For me it was when using wired headphones... so that was deafening. For the keyboard, I wish I could expand the height of it when in horizontal orientation (iPhone SE)

Yeah idk I think Linus either messed with the settings or was just doing smth wrong because i've never had an issue with the flipping or orientation of my phone. I even tried testing the exact same things he did, at first I thought maybe it's application based, but after trying and successfully changing the orientation of literally every single app / game that allows it I believe that he may have just orientation lock on lol. (which for the cameras you can lock it on landscape mode too). I have a screen recording  of me doing all of these, but the file is too large for the forum (20MB max). I only mention this because it was a whole section in the video, I’m not trying to praise apple and say they do no wrong, just that it may have been user error this time.

On the internet accounts thing, wanted to point out that you can do it in either the contacts, mail, notes or calendar section of the settings and it will sign your account into all of them (provided they’re checked off). Not sure if someone else mentioned it already …lol too lazy to read through and verify.

also liked Linus’ point on  it getting upset about the divide if you’ve never spent time on the other side. Ya never know you don’t like something if you don’t try it….like broccoli, or a new ice cream flavor.

They were mentioned in the WAN show comments section / this forum multiple times.

While I think it's totally fine for Linus to prefer things certain ways, and I fully agree with some points, like how any keyboard feels terrible on iOS and the inconsistency in the back button (or lack of), there's something in this video that really upset me like, way more than it should be.

Around 12:40, Linus complained that "I had to manually sign into to everything, including my Google account, which left me wondering what exactly was the point".

Really Linus? Do we need to list all the 6327832678 security reasons and implications that, allowing such a thing across devices, would be a security nightmare? Remember when you got hacked by Cookie hijack? It's one of the reasons. Please, ask Luke what he thinks on your idea of transferring everything, including the signed-in state.

I'm sorry if this sound rude, and it's not meant to be. But it's unbelievable a person with so much experience, specially in getting hacked, asking for something like this.

And yes, the point is not to waste hours searching and installing apps manually.

This is a really disappointing yet completely expected video from Linus. Really petty, premeditated complaints about something he didn’t like before even trying it. Most of these “issues” are just Linus still trying to use an iPhone like an Android. Prime example is doubling down on his accounts issue which is really easy to find inside any apps’ settings that uses said account.

The orientation issue isn’t even an iOS issue, it’s a Jetpack Joyride issue. This was pointed out to Linus when he complained about it on the WAN show and even the tiniest bit of research would have shown him this. Yet he’s still banging that drum in this video which just shows how un-impartial he went into this “experiment.”

I really do feel sorry for people who can’t just enjoy either ecosystem and instead play into the smartphone fanboy wars. It’s really disappointing in 2024 that we still have this divide.

And ironic enough, I just tested and the LTT forums are vulnerable to cookie hijack. Guys, come on.

the video has a factual error at 9;00 which becomes a whole issue as you can actually control ios media and ringer volume separately. Media volume is controlled by the volume buttons and a unified slider for the system sounds, ringtones and notifications is available as ringer volume in sounds and haptics

There was no need to get overly mad at apple about it

@LinusTech Please see this

at 13:00,

iOS still has the accounts section, it’s just distributed by app now like contacts or calendar

Imagine everything i have written in a Linus Voice/ linus tone (Spock live long and prosper gif here ,idk why tho, i guess i just want to say that i like star trek and am waiting for new seasons of the ongoing shows), But seriously, a lot of what i type only makes sense when said in a Linus tone from an older ltt video (circa 2017-2019 & now 2024-onwards) basically before he got a beard and a lot of it should make sense even in a Linus with a beard face.

also note as per the latest typing test on my laptop, my accuracy is 69%

I'm not weird/creepy, I'm just observant I have ADHD and am not on any meds for it.
