So I upgraded my Ryzen 5 2600 to a Ryzen 5 5600X today on a gigabyte B450M ds3h motherboard and it seemed to go well. I was on bios version F2 and the most recent one was F61. I didn't upgrade in one go, I read though all previous bios and first upgraded F2->F32 and then F32->41 and then F41->F61.

Once I had checked that the new bios worked with the old CPU I swapped them out and booted into windows with my new CPU and bios. I started a game update and went for a drink, I came back and the system was powered down so I tried to turn it back on again and the furthest I can get is the login screen before it turns off again.

The steps seem to be as follows:

Turn PC on

Bios splash screen

Windows loading wheel

Now I have a few different things happen here, either

Blue screen - windows failed to launch (retry or advanced troubleshooting)

Windows update screen saying "Do not turn off your computer" only for the computer to turn itself off after about 30 seconds.

And every once in a while it goes though the update screen and then into the login page, I put in my password and then it shuts down again

Please could someone help me out here as I'm very lost as to what I can do in this situation

Some additional details

OS - Windows 10 pro

What OS was originaly installed on the system? - was a custom build but has been running windows 10 pro for about 6 years perfectly

Age of system - I built it in 2018 but this is the first time I have upgraded anything other than the GPS

CPU model - Ryzen 5 2600 (old) Ryzen 5 5600x (new)

Video Card model - 1070ti

MotherBoard - gigabyte B450M DS3h

Power Supply - CORSAIR 450w

Please see thread for current state

You won't since it's the same hardware you are running on

Ok great, I'll try that. I've found that when I re-flash the bios I get about 5 mins in windows before it shuts down again, is there anything that I should try to do before it shuts down again?

Bad news, I tried to reinstall windows and it turned itself off at the start of the install and now I am getting "unable to find windows system 32"

OOf, sounds like dead ssd, can you enter the system through usb?

You built as you said, this system in 2018, thats a solid 6 years, the drives are not expected to be very healthy by now

Some more bad news, I followed a tutorial online to clean the disk which worked so I reinstalled windows onto it and as soon as I put in my password it turned off again. I swapped back to the old cpu, rolled back the bios to the last stable version and tried again, couldn't even get to the bios.

Current state is I can click the power button and all fans other than the cpu cooler spin up, nothing on the screen. I think I might have a potentially bricked PC?

try booting from a usb and check crystal disk info on drive health

I don't think it's a drive issue, I was having issues after installing the new cpu so I think it's more likely a motherboard/cpu issue. Potentially a bios/cpu mismatch? My other theory is that the new cpu caused the psu to overload which was leading to the shutdowns but that's no longer the problem since I have the old cpu back in.

My current goal is just to get something to display on the screen
