so about 9 months ago i built a cheap lga 1150 atx gaming pc, using a cheap 20 dollar early 2000's atx case i bought used for 20$. about 3 weeks ago i was given a free Z87 asus sabertooth motherboard alongside a 4770K cpu, and an  id cooling se-214-xt cpu air cooler. i test fit the mobo and cpu cooler into my case and the cpu cooler just barely fits. like the top of the heat-pipes almost touches the plexiglass on the side panel. im wondering if i should just tough it out and find a way to make this all work or if i should toss out money on a bigger case with more room for my cooler or if i should just buy a smaller air cooler i do plan to overclock the cpu if it matters

below are pics of the mobo case and cpu air cooler ohh if it matter the mobo was given to me just as how you see it pictured i pulled the mobo and cpu cooler pics from google since my camera isnt working atm

so dose the side close or not? if it closes all it good.

i mean suck to smack on a case but a hammer could clearance it a bit...

but ya old cases are not vary wide.

@thrasher_565 i havent tested it to see if the case closes i will try that tomorrow but aside from the cpu backplate the mobo also has a full backplate so im a lil worried it might not work

the mb has stand offs so should be fine. but we will see.

you can take one off and see how its fits against the mb.

@thrasher_565 my only other option is to use this cooler but i dont think it was built for overclocking even tho the mfg specs say its rated for 125 watt tdp for lga 115X

@thrasher_565 do you think my dynatron cpu cooler will do the job im not sure if im gonna overclock just yet but even if i do i dont plan to go above 4Ghz

were are you from?

im guessing that case wont work and the dynatron cpu cooler would be a downgrade so...leaning towards a new case...

i dont no whats needed to cool it its hard for me to compare old stuff to new stuff...

back in the day we had a full custom water loop with at lest a 360 rad and d5 pump...so i dont no🤷‍♂️

new coolers these days cool quite well so i just dont no sorry

whats the rest of the build? gpu? and what plans did you have for this case if it did fit. leave the front open or fill it or what?

@thrasher_565 psu is a thermaltake smart 700 watt white rated its all i could afford at the time and gpu is an rx 580 4gig from MSI https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/msi-rx-580-gaming-x-4-gb.b4757

last year in dec of 2023 i built my friend a cheap lga 1150 pc using parts i got either for free or cheap and since i had some spare parts lying around after his build i then built this pc for me to mess around with since i already have a high end am5 build this build was mostly for fun and for to play much older titles that dont like my new 8 core cpu and 6700XT lol

@thrasher_565 i will prolly test fir the id cpu cooler without thermal paste to see if it fits with the lid closed my only concern is the case has no room for a rear fan so im worried about airflow i may just toss in the dynatron fan and call it a day besides i doubt overclocking the cpu would be worth it anyway

ya i hear ya old stuff is just cool at times... well can just keep and eye out for free or cheap stuff down the road. there got to be many used case on the used market...

ya newer gpu are wider and thats a thinner case so clearance also could have problems with gpu and probly just plugging in the power... and cooling is well non atm...in that case...

If it doesn't touch the panel, It's fine.

So here's an idea. The PSU will be the exhaust fan, which is not ideal. IIWII. I'm assuming you won't use the front bays so modify that area to mount fans. Buy powerful fans, put a dust filter in front of them, and run them on intake so they force air out. You could also make a hole in the plexiglass and mount an exhaust airflow fan there, and/or drill lots of holes in it for ventilation, or remove it and replace it with a screen that will give more ways or for the air.

Didn't the ID Cooling one fit???

The CM should also work... you don't have a hot CPU.
