Can't get wired headset working on Windows 10

I can't get a wired headset (with microphone) working in Windows 10, plugging it into the microphone jack makes everything go mute and no audio is coming through the headphones. This is my very first headset by the way, I just want it to work.

I don't know how other gamers do the whole headset thing. I've had better luck setting up a printer.

You need a splitter or a combo jack. Some headsets come with a cable that splits the 2 signals.

It might be TRRS rather than TRS. You'll need a splitter to split the signal for input and output. The last one in the image below is TRRS, commonly used on earbuds and headsets that might be used with a mobile phone (or any compatible device really). This is likely what you'd need. Assuming of course this is the issue. What's the headset make/model?

My headphone jack is the one with 3 rings.

The jack on the computer or do you mean the headset itself? So if you have the three black rings, you'll need that adapter I linked. Or like someone else mentioned, sometimes headsets will come with an adapter. What's the headset?

You need a splitter. One that has a separate cable for audio and mic. Your mic jack obviously wont transfer audio out so you need to split it up.

What headset did you get? They normally vome with one

I was reffering to the headset's headphone jack. I got it for 2500 tickets at an arcade. It's a "Vibe e-ssential Swivel Microphone Headset"

ok, but dumb question, why does it work on a phone? ... no splitter needed, it just works!

why does pc have these notorious issues with any kind of audio?

my pc cant even do 7.1 through optical (and before you say it doesn't work, PS3, PS4, PS5 can do this!)

Because it would be silly for phones to have two 3.5mm ports for audio output and microphone input, so it makes more sense to use a single 3.5mm combo port. A lot of laptops do this too.

I believe optical can only do 7.1 if its compressed but it has to use Dolby Digital or DTS Surround which would require the motherboard manufacturer to purchase a license to have that functionality. Console makers pay for the license.

Because on a pc there is space to have a mic and speaker jack. On a phone that would be a waste of space. The reason you split it is so there is no crosstalk. Aka the issue op has.

They can but it's VERY lossy. Optical can BARELY do 5.1 without loss. 7.1 is noticeably degraded so most do not give you the option to swap to it
