I'm looking to upgrade from my RTX 3060 12 GB, which has served me well but struggles to keep up with my 1440p 360 Hz OLED display. While AMD GPUs have performed well for me in the past, I’ve had persistent issues with their software, such as resetting custom profiles for undervolts and fan curves. I worked around this with MSI Afterburner, but similar problems arose with my RX 5700 XT and RX 6800 XT, the latter also failing due to a memory issue.

I primarily play competitive games with occasional AAA titles, and I enjoy using ray tracing and upscaling. My NVIDIA experience has been more stable, though I’ve encountered minor inconveniences like manually reactivating profiles post-Windows reinstall and occasional Alt+Tab issues likely tied to DSC.

I’m considering the RX 7800 XT for its extra 4 GB of VRAM and $100 savings but am drawn to the RTX 4070 Super for its additional features and more consistent software experience. With potential price increases due to upcoming U.S. regulations, I believe now is the right time to upgrade. Any advice would be appreciated!

Buying from the US involve some extra steps and taxes for me.

I'm looking to upgrade from my RTX 3060 12 GB, which has been a fantastic card, handling every game I've thrown at it. However, it’s starting to fall short when trying to keep up with my new 1440p 360 Hz OLED display. While I've used AMD GPUs before, and they’ve performed well, the software experience has left much to be desired. For example, creating custom profiles with undervolts and custom fan curves often resets itself, despite applying and saving the settings.

I managed to work around this issue with MSI Afterburner on my RX 570, but I faced similar challenges with the RX 5700 XT and later the RX 6800 XT. Unfortunately, the latter also developed a memory-related fault within a month of use.

I primarily play competitive games, but occasionally enjoy AAA titles. My experience with NVIDIA has been noticeably more stable. I also like to play with RT and upscaling.  Currently, I run my RTX 3060 on an undervolt with a custom fan curve without any issues. The only minor inconvenience is that after a recent Windows reinstallation, I now have to manually activate the profile via hotkeys at startup. Additionally, I’ve noticed occasional issues with using Alt+Tab to switch between windows, which I understand might be related to DSC rather than the GPU itself.

I’m not particularly tied to either NVIDIA or AMD—I just want a smooth, reliable experience. That said, I’m weighing my options between the RX 7800 XT and the RTX 4070 Super. The RX 7800 XT’s extra 4 GB of VRAM and $100 savings are tempting, but the RTX 4070 Super offers NVIDIA’s additional features and what I’d describe as a more stable software experience. I was going to wait for 5000 series to launch, but after looking at recent information about new laws in the US that will come with price increases in many products, I think it is time to get a new GPU for a decent price right now.

Any advice on which direction to take would be greatly appreciated!

First, explain fall short.   My 7900xtx can't do 1440p 360.

Either card is fine.  They're close in raw performance, but Nvidia has the edge in the tricks.

I'd go Nvidia unless you want to step upto the 7900gre or 7900xt.

I am looking to get 300 FPS + mainly on competitive games such as Overwatch 2. Other story driven games, I am fine with using VRR, Vertical Sync, upscaling and frame gen to get 90+ FPS.

Sadly, the 7900 XT is not available on my favorite store at the moment. I appreciate your answer.

To get as close as possible to such a target, you will need an edge in raster performance and to avoid a CPU bottleneck (I see you have an old Ryzen 7)

Something like a 7900GRE should be of comparable price to the 4070 Super. AMD's graphics driver has a lower CPU overhead which will reduce the negative effect of CPU bottleneck

You won't have a problem achieving 90fps in singleplayer games with the 7800XT, unless you enable raytracing

Actually, I upgraded to R5 5600 for stronger gaming performance. I forgot to update the info on my profile. I have also though about NVIDIA´s driver overhead issues but I eventually plan to get the 5700X3D. According to Steve from HardwareUnboxed, he is recommending at least to get 16 GB of VRAM for future game releases, that is why I am having a hard time deciding. If only NVIDIA was not so stingy with VRAM

For perspective, I use between 8-12gb vram for 1440p Ultrawide on Ultra /Max

Scale that up or down to your use case.

16gb is a safe call.  Tho 12 may be if you run 1080p.

12GB of VRAM is still fine at 1440p for now. The only time I had to care about not busting the limit was when modding Cyberpunk

More games are using UE5 and luckily it has pretty good VRAM management. Although this won't save us from eventually needing more VRAM if developers decide to use higher resolution textures

I appreciated this answer. It is kinda hard to determine how important VRAM is going to be for the next 3 to 4 years. I think I should be good for a good while in that case.
