Can I use both WiFi and ethernet for the same network on my pc to get my full speed?

Yea I think that may be the problem. These arent twisted at all, not even a crease of twistingIMG_20241203_201250_722.thumb.jpg.e075cbb5bdcd413d1d87c25d87fd9b3c.jpg

Yep... time for a new cable, no further testing required.

I know it sounds like a stupid question but is there a way to do it?

So my ISP gives 150mbit internet which goes to my gigabit router. Now full speeds with gig ethernet and 5ghz wifi are no problem, but my PC is a bit far away from the router so it only gets around 70mbit from the WiFi. I already routed a 100mbit Cat5 cable (which was supposed to be a cat5e but i got scammed but its already in place anyways) to the PC and that gives it 100mbit internet. Is there a way to use both wifi and that cat5 cable to get the full 150mbit internet? Routing a new gig ethernet cable to the PC takes a lot of time so I'd prefer to avoid that. Thank you

I think that ,this can be done through network bridging. For this you just need to open network and sharing center. Choose both WIFI and ethernet by using control. Then right click and choose bridge connections. This will combine two networks into one.

Just get a proper Cat5e/Cat6 cable imo.

I just tried that, and it still doesnt get over 100mbit, in fact its a bit worse than just the ethernet, at like 94mbit.

Im trying to avoid that since the pc and router are a few rooms away, neat cabling is pretty hard since I need to attach it to the ceiling which in turn makes me need to move all my furniture around to get the ladder in place, good cat5e/cat6 cables are kinda expensive(not really but you get the point).

Im just trying to explore my options here, if nothing else works then I will just get a cat5e/cat6 cable.

Your only realistic option is a proper cable.

Theoretically there is link aggregation (aka "bonding" or "teaming"). But that is something that needs to be supported on both ends. Meaning your computer and the router.

Afaik regular Windows does not support it, only Windows Server. Likewise your typical home router isn't going to support it.

Generally with my ISP you do, not only that they over provision by 20% or so. So you likely will get slightly faster speeds, as long as there is no congestion.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

So explain your "scam" cable more. Cat5 (non-e) is pretty rare in 2024. Are you certain that you can't get more than 100mbit out of it?

Yes, i have tried all ports on my router, every laptop that has an ethernet port, other routers, cable extensions, cleaning the contacts, it just stops at 100mbit. Pretty tempted to just cut the cable and see if it really is just 4 wires or did 1 or 2 disconnect somewhere down the line? Cat5 non-e is still very much around at least where im at, since most providers only give like 50mbit internet which in turn floods the market with cheapo 300mbit routers with only 100mbit ports, and since most people cant really make use of gigabit speeds because of that, cat5 is still very popular.

I get 150mbit on wifi using my phone when im close to the router, and my laptop which I usually plug into the router when downloading big files does get 150mbit when im using a cat6 cable. Also yeah the actual max speed i get is around 160mbit, so definitely more than advertised.

Avoid the hassle, get the cable.

thats, literally what I'm doing, avoiding the hassle. Replacing the cable is much more of a hassle than just tweaking a few settings.

You don't have to cut it... get one of those cheap Rj45 testers:

"Professional" my ass, it is a really simple tool... but makes diagnosing bad crimps / connectors / damaged cables easy.

Maybe you just need to re-crimp a couple of connectors, not too much of a hassle IMO.

I get that you aren't getting the speed, but I HIGHLY doubt that the cable is cat 5 and not cat 5 e. It is likely just terminated wrong. How old is this cable? More than 25 years old? Cat 5e came out in 2001.

Not to mention, the difference between the cables is minimal. Just the # of twists per inch.

Don't have the tool for that, but if its cheaper than a cat6 cable, i'll do that.

I bought it like months ago brand new. A mistake on my part not to test it first before securing it to the wall. The packaging was dusty and looked ancient, but not 25 years ancient.

Wait really? I thought cat5 had 4 connections and cat5e had 8. I have a bunch of 4 contact cables which i got from those cheap 300mbit routers and I assumed those were cat5.

My curiosity got the better of me and i cut a bit of the outer part of the cable.IMG_20241203_195154_964.thumb.jpg.780c5b1cec76940651c2ea6a22c454d7.jpg

It has 0 shielding and doesnt seem to be twisted at all? I dont know how much of a problem that is, but judging by what @Blue4130said, i'm pretty sure it's not supposed to look like this

Edit: Heres where I bought it from if that helps. https://tokopedia.link/vP4lQ0NI1Ob

UTP = Unshielded Twisted Pair.
No shielding: just don't jam it next to two dozen other ethernet cables or close to powerlines, for home use - perfectly fine.
But the pairs should be twisted... like so:

Edit: When terminating the cable one should aim to have as little of it untwisted, having full 25m of it being utwisted... you are lucky it didn't drop to 10Mb/s 😄
