Ok, so I need a new monitor but there's a lot of options and I don't know what brands are good or bad. What is the best monitor for under $400, and also preferably either ultrawide or like around 30 inches? I like me a nice big monitor. I'm using it mainly for gaming BTW.

From one cat to another, I highly recommend the LG UltraGear 32" IPS LED 180Hz 1ms NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible and AMD FreeSync Gaming Monitor with HDR. I've been using this monitor for several months and it has exceeded my expectations. It offers a large screen size, impressive refresh rate, and G-SYNC compatibility, making it perfect for gaming. Plus, it's currently on sale for only $270, which is a fantastic deal for the features it offers.

Specs:

  • Screen Size: 31.5 inches

  • Resolution: QHD (2560 x 1440)

  • Panel Type: IPS

  • Refresh Rate: 180Hz

  • Response Time: 1ms

  • Color Accuracy: 99% sRGB

  • Connectivity: 2 x HDMI ports, 1 x DisplayPort

  • Additional Features: NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible and AMD FreeSync

Ultrawide on that budget, so 34" 3440x1440, is tough. You've limited to VA's and typically not great ones.

Normal 16:9 2560x1440 is going to be more realistic however we run into a very common problem. People want a "big" screen but don't have the GPU horsepower or the budget to move to 4K where 32" and above makes sense. So they look at 2560x1440 in 32" and I just cannot recommend those. Yes, if you're new to all this you could go that route like with what @Mr. McMeowington suggested above and probably be happy but as an enthusiast in this space,  that size is just too big for only 1440p resulting in a lower than ideal PPI and less sharp image.

For normal 1440p, the sweet spot (and most popular) size is 27".

Now, last week was the deal of the century that it looks like you've missed out on where AOC was selling their 27" 1440p QD-OLED for $399 and it was going like crazy. There is a chance it might come back in stock at that price: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/7LzXsY/aoc-agon-pro-ag276qzd2-267-2560-x-1440-240-hz-monitor-ag276qzd2

That all being said, that budget is in this weird no-man's land where there is no point in spending more than say $300 at most on a 27" 1440p IPS unless you can jump to OLED but ignoring the deal on that AOC last week, that's normally $550 or so and up.

If you were dead set on a high end, latest generation QD-OLED panel and really want ultrawide, this is what you're looking at: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CtBzK8/msi-mag-341cqp-qd-oled-340-3440-x-1440-175-hz-curved-monitor-mag-341cqp-qd-oled

I know SO many people that jumped on that $400 AOC deal, we can all hope it comes back in stock at that price.
