Seagate usb drive is stuck at 100% but just trying to open a folder.

I bought a seagate ultratouch usb drive 2TB around 3 years back it was working fine. If i try to use it now it lags out the whole pc even if i just try to open a folder disk usage is a 100% with 0 read and write speed(see screenshot) any idea how i can salvage this and get my data back?

General drive failure. Most likely there is some corruption in the master file table. I had an issue with a hard drive acting the same way. It's not completely dead because it is spinning and communicating with Windows, so it's not purely a mechanical or electrical failure.

try removing the disk from the case and read it directly from sata

Sort of. I took the drive to another computer and then I was able to format it. I then put it back into the original computer and transferred 10 TB of data overnight and it’s been working fine ever since. I lost all the data on the disk, but I run parallel drives in this particular computer so I had a back up of the data.

Thanks will try that

Check the drive for bad sector SMART records using Crystaldiskinfo. SMR drives will remap sectors and hide the problems after a format, but that doesn’t always mean the problem is fixed.

as soon as i start crystaldisk it goes to 100% and lags out a lot

It won’t work.  CDInfo won’t even load results. When corruption like this happens, the drive is toast. It will not respond to anything until it can be formatted.

yeah but it has no SATA ports that i can see

You would have to open up the case to see that. Example:

If you can, try using a different computer, and connect it by sata to rule out usb being the problem. If you can't retrieve smart data at that point it's likely the drive is just bad. I would obviously not recommend trying to format the drive if there's data on it you're trying to get back.

run Error Checking USB Drive Is Stuck at 0%, 10%, or 100% Fix 1: Run CHKDSK. Fix 2: Update or Reinstall the Device Driver. Fix 3: Format the USB Drive to Normal.

DO NOT use CHKDSK on a broken drive, it doesn’t do shit and will further ruin your chances of getting anything back.
