Would I see any benefit from a CPU upgrade?

So I've got a Ryzen 5700X that I'm quite happy with along with an RX 7900xtx for a GPU. I'm gaming at 5120x1440 and my monitor maxes out at 120Hz. I always set the framerate cap at 120fps anyway as I haven't noticed any perceivable difference in going beyond what my monitor can support anyway. Would I see any benefit from a CPU upgrade in terms of framerate in games? I'm inclined to say no, or possibly only marginal increases. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. I'm just curious.

Are you consistently sitting on the cap in the games you play? Unlikely you'd see much of a difference for now. If you plan to keep that system for a few more years, that may change.

In this scenario, it's obvious.

 

If you're getting more than 120 frames now, what good would a better cpu do? You cap at 120 anyway.

 

If you get under 120, then a cpu upgrade will benefit you

 

So... You hitting 120+?

 

Probably not in more than a few games, as 5kx1440 is a lot of pixels.  Even with my 3440x1440, I can't get 120 in like Enshrouded always.

Your resolution is nearly 90% of the 4K monitor resolution. An X3D CPU would increase the 0.1% and 1% lows, smoothing out your frame-time graph—the games would drop less (run smoother).

GPU bound.

You are probably good to wait a generation of GPU's if you are happy, and even then you would benefit more by being able to update your settings. But you could always keep an eye out for a 5700x3d or 5800x3d

Most likely at such a high resolution, you are being mostly limited by the GPU. However, (LeVar Burton voice) you don't have to take my word for it. You can figure out for yourself whether you are being held back by the CPU by following the steps in this video:

 

 

Keep two things in mind:

 

1. You need to test without a frame cap or V-sync enabled in order to get accurate results with this kind of a test.

2. If you uncap the frame rate and discover that you are CPU-limited, but at above 120 fps in the games you care about, then it doesn't matter that you're technically CPU-limited since you're hitting your target frame rate.
