Currently running a 5800x3D with a RTX 4070, worried about future hardware prices due to politics, would an upgrade be smart or a waste?

First of all I know nobody here can look into the future but with the current political landscape I am worried about hardware prices for the next few years and I would like a bit of input and thoughts from other people. I am from Europe however I often saw prices spiking here due to various circumstances and the current events make me think the next four years won't be a great time to buy hardware anywhere in the world so thought it might be time to build my personal "One PC to rule them all!" and ride the chaos out.

I currently have:

- 5800x3D

- RTX 4070

- 32GB RAM @ 3600MT/s

- 4k 160hz VRR monitor

I know the 4070 isn't exactly a 4k card but I don't mind running on DLSS Performance or at about 66-75% rendering resolution so it's more in the realm of 1440p and I've yet to play a game where I had to make major concessions. I mostly play JRPGs and MMOs with the heaviest games I play being Throne & Liberty and Black Myth Wukong. Both games play absolutely fine on my system and while I know Wukong's highest settings are more of a Crysis type of deal it feels like I don't have a gigantic headroom left, especially when more games move to UE5 and leverage all the newest bells and whistles.

My original plan was to maybe upgrade at the end of 2025 or 2026 even depending on when I felt I need it and I know future proofing is more or less a fools errand but I don't make the biggest amount of money and I'm worried I'll be completely outpriced of any kind of upgrade going forward in the foreseeable future. I know the 5000 series is around the corner as well which further complicates things. If I do upgrade I've been thinking about a 9800x3D and perhaps a 4080 before I wake up one day next year and find out prices skyrocketed. The last time I was lucky to avoid craziness was upgrading from my Radeon 6850 to a Radeon 7970 because I saw a good deal for about €260 and just a week later I saw the same card for close to €500 because the mining craze started.

So yeah I technically could take some money from my "Break Glass in Case of Emergency" savings and sell my old parts so it offsets the costs somewhat but is there any sound reasoning here or do I let my fear cloud my judgement?

... i get the sentiment but i wouldn't do it... wait for 50xx series, imo 4070->4080 is just not a worthy upgrade, if anything get the cpu, should realistically be good for 5+ years, whereas the 4080 would probably be outdated sometimes next year.

like yes, you can do it but you wouldn't really gain that much , next year is new games that probably require a 5070/80 to be played at non potato settings.

me im still on my 3070 and i could upgrade to a 4070 super, but idk, i don't think i really need to... every second gen or so makes way more sense to me and you cant predict future pricing anyways.

next year for monster hunter wilds, a 5070 or something sounds good to me... (but if my 3070 runs it I'll probably wait for 60xx lol)

ps: ehh, worst case you'll play at "medium settings" its not that bad 🙂

I suppose you're very likely right, the 5000 series would make much more sense, I just hope a hypothetical 5070 won't be > €1000 after it releases and after it's back in stock after scalpers had their run with it. I mean I don't mind turning down settings but ever since I build my first PC around the Radeon x1600xt era I always managed to time my upgrades so I could avoid playing on Medium settings while still being sensible with money. It seems my long running streak might be over 😛

Your rig seems pretty ok right now, and you should be able to run most games at medium-high or some mix of the two. In any case, the only meaningful upgrades would be moving up to am5 with a 7800x3d/9800x3d and something similar to a 4090/7900xt.

Completely unrelated, is there a reason you prefer 4k with dlss over just 1440p?

Yeah I'm just worry how things will turn out over the next four-ish years which threw a potential wrench in my initial plans of letting this rig run until 2025/26.

I was entertaining a thought experiment of maybe just upgrading the CPU even though I clearly don't need the upgrade yet and basically a AM5 9800x3D upgrade would set me back around €950. How much could I get in a worst case scenario for a:

- B550 AORUS PRO V2

- 5800x3D w/o a cooler

- 32gb of 3600MT/s RAM (I don't know the detailed specs from the top of my head)

- Fractal Design Meshify 2 Compact White

if I could sell all this for €400-500 that would put my upgrade cost at around €500 which I could stomach right now. Is that realistic on the used marked for these parts? The problem is just, you're never guaranteed to sell things. Then I would keep my 4070, wait and see what happens at 5000 launch and then evaluate how much a 5070 costs vs how much I can sell my 4070 for at this time and either I am willing to pay or I have to ride my 4070 out.

As for 4k vs 1440p. As of earlier this year I work full time from home and working on my 1080p 144hz monitor felt kind of cramped so I treated myself for the new job and got a Coolermaster GP27U 4k 160hz Mini-LED monitor. I don't mind setting games to 1440p and having a slightly blurrier image however I find from an UI perspective it looks cleaner if I run the games at 4k and have the game portion of it downscaled while everything else remains crisp. That and Windows gets all funky with its scaling when you temporarily set games to 1440p when your desktop normally is 4k 125/150% scaled. I tried that when I got the monitor and each time I exited a 1440p game my windows would all wildly shift around and change sizes.

I could have gotten the same screen for cheaper in the 1440p variant which would have worked for work I guess but since I upgrade monitors very rarely I though I might as well go 4K since it's unlikely we go beyond that for normal usage anytime soon. I could have gotten an OLED too but with how much I see desktop UI elements over the day and me liking bright and colorful wallpapers I figured I side step the worry and go for Mini-LED which looks absolutely amazing at 1400nits. And I also have a LG C1 OLED TV for whenever I really want that OLED experience in a game.

Like, 300 - 400. Although, you wouldn't be crazy to start off at 500-600 first. You'll probably find a buyer if you list online but if possible, check if there's no shops near you that buy used PC parts.

A 4070 is an ok card and it's definitely worth waiting to see what the next-gen offerings will look like. From both nVidia and AMD.

Hmm alright, yeah I asked around my friend group too and most seemed to think €500 for everything seems to be fair. One part I forgot to mention here, the USB3.0 header on the board is broken, I accidentally snapped a pin off when first building it so I have my front USB attached to the USB 2.0 headers instead. The USB-C header works though so I hope it's just a small decrease in value.

And alright thanks for the insight about the GPU too. Given I can offset about half of the upgrade cost if selling my old parts works out, I feel the whole idea seems a little less crazy and panicky, am I wrong here?

This is more or less what I would end up with:
