Hi everyone,

I'm currently building a PC for my nephew for Christmas.

He is 14 and tends to ignore rules, but he is interested in IT, so it's time he gets a PC.

Building the PC is the easy part, but how do I make it teenproof so he can't visit adult sites and do other things not appropriate for his age?

At least make it harder, I'm sure there never is a 100% solution 😄

I also need a way to limit his game time. His parents are not any help, surfing the web is the best they can do with a PC.

And is there a good way to remote into his PC other than Team Viewer? I live an hour away, so going there if he needs help with something is not really an option.

I don't have any kids so I'm completely new to this topic.

I really hope you can give me some tips and suggest some programs.

Preferably free or one-time pay, but if it has to be, I'm willing to pay a subscription.

Thanks

Eardy

Nowadays you can't block adult content anymore. Sure, you can put together a list of adult websites and block them, but even Google doesn't care anymore.
You can simply google for "B***s" and get what you're looking for.

As for remote-ing into the PC, you can either use Windows RDP, but he'd need to have a static IP for it to work consistently, or you can try solutions like AnyDesk or VNC, depending on which one will allow you to create permanent login credentials so you can connect to it whenever the PC is booted up.

NZXT S340 | Ryzen 7 5900X | B550 AORUS PRO V2 | TridentZ RGB 2x8GB 3200 | RTX 4070
Nintendo Switch (2x), Nintendo *New* 3DS, PSP-1000, PSP-2000 (Crisis Core Limited Edition)

thanks for your suggestions so far.

his phone is pretty locked down. apple does provide some ways to lock it down and make it somewhat teen-safe.

RDP is not an option, they don't have a static IP and I don't want to forward any ports.

I know, that it is pretty much impossible to ban all porn but I want to make it harder.

And I need a way to limit his game time. otherwise, he will play all day and night.

Buy him a Windows laptop with snapdragon x elite, incompatibility will stop him from gaming, or become a tech expert.

Prevention from gaming is pretty simple, just add packet loss. This won't affect normal uses like watching youtube, but will ruin his gaming experience.

Btw, what ever you do will be removed by a windows pe drive, and unless it's from a router/ISP side blocking is pretty much useless.

Assuming you know the code, dump his Internet browsing history from the router, pass all sites to a llm with web abilities, have it examine all sites and do a blacklist update.

As for remoting, if he won't want you in he just have to block whatever you are using by firewall, that's "This" easy. If you want absolute control you will probably have to look for expensive hardware with BMCs, these motherboards have an onboard arm controller that permits screen capture and remote operations.

For remoting in, I use the built in Windows feature "Quick Assist" for my dad.

I just put a shortcut on his desktop and made sure he knows where to find it.

Then he just tells me the one-time-use code over the phone and I'm in.

But that would only work for you if he wanted you to remote in.
