Heyo, my friend bought Samsung 980 M.2 NVMe SSD (not pro) a few days ago. After installing it today his download speed on Steam went from 160 Mbps to 23Mbps average.

His external SSD has higher speed (around 100)

Is it because it Dramless? Sorry im not the smartest person about PC stuff.

I googled most of the stuff.

Best regards

There are several factors that may affect the NVMEs speed, as download is sequential write process, it doesn't always have to be a fast process even on a product that is supposed to be faster overall compared to HDD for example,

  • There are other elements that play part in download speed:
  • Internet speed
  • Server connection speed
  • Data de-compression which is handled by the CPU
  • Size of the SSD
  • Amount of free space
  • - possible firmware updates could improve SSD's performance later as it may get optimized in terms of how they handle data making them more efficient
  • etc

Did your friend purchase a brand new or used 980?

Also, just for clarity, the drive type shouldn't affect the download speed in Steam, it will only affect the write speed of the game to the drive. So this very well could just be a network related slow down. If they can repeatably affect the speed by changing which drive the game is installing to then that would be more telling.

It's possible that it could be an issue with write caching, causing the write speed portion of the steam game download to be slower than normal. I would install Samsung Magician and check for any firmware updates available for the drive.

Steam download speed is not how you evaluate a modern NVMe SSD.

If this is an updated version of Windows 10 or 11, definitely not.

Is the drive have the latest firmware in Samsung Magician? If you run Crystal Disk Mark with the Real World Preset in NVMe mode, what are the results?

For the record all my NVMe SSD's are DRAM-less, its no longer a concern for normal people with modern OSes. I download from Steam at 1Gb/s.

Download speed != read/write speed. Have your friend create a forum account so they can troubleshoot their own issue. 👍

Ideally, we want to see screenshots of Steam showing what they believe is "slow" and screenshots of CrystalDiskMark tests.

If you do run CrystalDiskMark, set it to NVME SSD in the Settings drop down, and Real World Performance in the Profile drop down.

Update. He was downloading steam games while he still had lots of windows updates. After it got updated it went up to 500 Mbps.

Thanks anyway. For future stuff for me/him.

quite a bruh moment, could have checked in Task Manager if something else wasn't eating the drive alive..

Copy/paste the following command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
and press Enter.(Note: This step may take a few minutes to start and up to 30 minutes to complete).
After you see a message saying "The operation completed successfully", copy and paste this command:
sfc /scannow
and press Enter.
Wait for a message that says "Verification 100% complete".
So add this command:
chkdsk /f /r /b
Confirm with "Y" and restart the computer for this last step.
(Remembering that the commands must be visualized in English, be careful not to be translated to another language automatically)

In case you didn't see, there is no issue. There never was.
