GPU fan stuck at 100%

Go to solution Solved by Tortugues,

So I got FanControl

At first, it looked like one of the two controllers was dead.

Then, I took the shroud apart one last time, thinking i would siply link the fans I needed to the working controller and leave the third one alone.

But when I put it back together, both controllers were found and controllable. However the middle fan still won't spin up when I order it's twin to do so

Hi, I'm having a mind boggling issue with the fans on my GIGABYTE 3080 Gaming OC.

I recently took it apart entirely to clean it completly. I took off the backplate, the heatsink, and dismantled the shroud to remove and clean the fans.

I know i might have roughed the fans' cables a bit, their gauge got a little damaged in some points, but i don't think i ripped nor cut one. (See pictures below)

My issue is that now, one of the two fan headers on my 3080 keeps ramping up the fans its connected to to 100%, whichever fan i connect it to. I'm guessing i might have damaged that header, but i don't see how that could've happened...

Note that, even though this is a second hand GPU, it had been running fine until i took it apart and back together, and I had never had such a fan issue.

Has anyone ever this issue or similar? I'm starting to feel desperate as I'm guessing the fans are not the problem, but the header is... Which means I would have to renounce to 1 of my three fans (any idea which to discard?/which would cost me the less in terms of performance?) or I would have to get a 1 to 3 fan Y cable... Again, any idea if these exist and where I can find them?

By the way I live in France, so shipping from the US is often pricey/difficult.

Thanks to anyone who stopped by to read my message <3

Salut compatriote

You may have damaged the cable or the header now PWM doesn't work anymore I suspect

You could buy a cheapo fan cable splitter and plug all 3 fans on the "good", working, remaining header, all will only have one control but at least be controllable...

Hey, thanks for the quick response, that was my first idea of a temporary definitive solution, because I still don't see any physical damage to the header soooo... splitter it is then, I'm goinf on a quest to find something like a 1 to 3  or just a secondary 1 to 2 combined with the1 to 2 that came with the GPU. Also, is it normal for said 1 to 2 splitter to only have on the end that goes into the header?

Can't understand your point .. a 1 to 2 fan splitter has 2 male connectors for the fan cables "in", and one female to the header "out"

There's something else now... The fan is much slower (almost normal) when I'm in the bios... wth 😭

hey, have you tried msi after burner or nvidia control panel? those should give you the ability to controll your 3080 fans.

If you repasted the card, it's a possibility that you didn't properly paste it or a thermal pad is misaligned causing a hotspot.

If you didn't replace the thermal pads when you did the re-paste or you did but didn't insure they were in the right spots that could be causing one of your fans to spin up to 100% while in Windows, but while at minimum/idle use in the bios it doesn't trip the sensor. Basically if one of those pads is misaligned or your thermal paste application doesn't have proper coverage a thermal sensor may be registering over temperature causing one or all of your fans to ramp up. I'd double check the paste and pads before ordering replacement parts. You could also use a temperature monitoring program such as HWMonitor to see the temps registered by the GPUs sensors.

If it's something you're not comfortable doing again, maybe have a professional take a look.

yeah op needs to install afterburner if only to check the temps... if its running hot even tho fans run full blast, its likely the heatsink isnt seated properly.

Hey, thanks for the idea, but i checked temps, and they're not related to a fan going 100%

However, I tried installing FanControl to monitor the fan speeds, and when syncing, FanControl detected it could not control the GPU fan controller n°1, while n°2 was fine and controllable.

My issue appears to have gone away now that i plugged the fans exactly how they were before I took the shroud apart.
