late 2013 imac target display mode with m4 mac mini

Go to solution Solved by seanondemand,

There’s a reason target display mode died. It’s a pain in the ass. Buy a 50 dollar monitor on marketplace.

I have a question about my late 2013 imac. i want buy the new m4 mac mini and use the imac as monitor (the imac supports target display mode).

but do you have to start up the imac and then select to use the mac mini or can you start up the mac mini and have it boot directly from the mac mini.

does the imac go in sleep mode when using target display mode ?

Yup it has to boot then you press a keyboard sequence.

I think the parts are still running internally, but don't know the exact power states.

I'm guessing you have read this page. https://support.apple.com/en-us/105126. Your mac mini isn't offically supported here, but It will likely work with the tb3 to tb2 adapter.
