so im building a socket 1150 gaming rig for fun i already have an AM5 build so this will just be a rig to mess around with. the motherboard is a Z97 asus sabertooth im wondering between the 4770K and the 4790K which cpu overclocks better not looking for extreme overclock just wanting to know which cpu will be a better overclock on a tower air cooler with a 120mm fan

afaik theyre both basically the same just that the 4790k will probably be slightly better binned on average (mildly higher core clocks + mildly better imc on average), does not mean that there arent 4770k that are much better than the 4790k

id get the cheaper of the two but if the price diff is minimal sure 4790k why the hell not

as for the other parts

board wise not too sure on asus boards for haswell but i do know boards like the z97 ocf or z97x soc are pretty good not like this matters if you arent going to use the imc anyways (<2600 ddr3)

as for the ram i highly suggest avoiding xmp sticks as you definitely wont be clocking high enough for the pcbs to make a difference (3200+) and even then the differences will only start to be noticable at speeds like 3600+ or if you want to bench and you dont bench with 4gbit ics (usually stuff like 1gbit psc gdie hypers even 2gbit d die cfr)

binning wont matter either as for 16gb with 2 sticks which is what id assume youd go for theres two possibilities being samsung and hynix, samsung are all dogshit for 4gbit ics and wont clock much past 2400 even on a 2400 binned xmp stick, hynix on the other hand all of their ics will clock 3000+ and mfr especially clocks very high (3600+) even if its on an oem bare pcb

heres an example with some double sided hynix 2gbit cfr sticks on x58 running 2800 11-14-15 auto subtimings except trfc = 120 stabily, partnumber is hmt351u6cfr8c

if you want to run 2 sticks 16gb my reccomendation would be any oem blue pcb or even fake black pcb hynix stick though for the latter youll want to make sure the chips are hynix and not samsung as the partnumbers are bullshit on those, should do 2800 easy with 11-14-15/11-15-15 auto subtimings at ~1.8v, same reccomendation for 4 stick 32gb as hynix is simply the best 4gbit ddr3 you can get

for 4 stick 16gb id reccomend hynix 2gbit cfr with the partnumber hmt351u6cfr8c as ive observed it to be particularly good for 2dpc with my x58a ud3r being able to windows boot 2600 with 2 sticks in the innermost channel where my 1gbit gdie or 2gbit d die would top out at 2400 before dissapearing, trfc bottoms out at 100 for 2000+ as far as i can tell and yes i can technically run that trfc at 2800 but i ran out of voltage headroom as it was already at 2.1v for that oc above and i couldnt loosen cl anymore hence trfc 120, degradation is a concern over 2v vdimm for this specific ic but this wont be an issue for you as that z97 tops out at a pitiful 1.92v and you dont really want to run overly tight cl anyways since it doesnt really benifit performance that much compared to the secondaries and tertiaries

tldr 2 stick 16gb = any oem hynix 8gb stick, 2800c11 easy no need to set subtimings just the imc volts (vccsa/io) will likely need some work for 3000+, same for 4 stick 32gb albiet 2400 easy due to boardlimit

4 stick 16gb hynix 2gbit cfr hmt351u6cfr8c, 2400 easy but 2600+ may require some work

there is no universal safe voltage for rams its completely ic dependant and the cpu could care less about vdimm

My guess is you'd have a better chance of hitting the silicon lottery with a 4790k, but they're extremely similar so the differences might just be splitting hairs.

If the 4770K is half the price of a 4790K, I'd go for the cheaper one. (Especially if this is just a curiosity/for-fun build.)

I sold my soul for ProSupport.
