Hello,

Spoiler

A short background, first of all, I am not native english speaking, so I am sorry for the mistakes I will make.

So I have a PC with an Asrock x570 phantom gaming 4. I am using a XIAOLO 2.5GBase-T PCIe network card. It has a Intel I225-V 2.5gb chip. It is PCIe 4x.

I also have a Synology Network NAS 1819+.

I bought an Intel X540-T2 which is PCI-e 8x. Is it compatible with my Asrock Card ? I do believe I can put a PCIe 8x card into a PCIe 16x slot but I am not so sure anymore... Is it the case ?

Do you think my 2.5gb card is going to be compatible with my NAS ?

thank you !

Have a nice day !

That will work.

Definitely. It's just a network card, it doesn't really care what is on that network.

English is not my first language, so please excuse any confusion or misunderstandings on my end, also I like to edit my posts a lot.

I don't think the x540 has 2.5 and 5 gb modes so your limited to 1gbe link speeds. I'd get anouther 2.5gbe nice here.

You can put any pcie device in as long as it fits, it will run at the slower link speed.

Thanks to both of you.

Well, yeah, no problem with the hardware. I was wondering if the Synology will have the driver. Although, I can't find the box of it anymore so I can't find the low profil bracket so far. Hopefully I will find it sooner or later.

Well, Intel website says it does 10gbits. At least, I can plug it in without being afraid of doing something wrong 😉

That doesn't mean that it can do 2,5 or 5Gb/s. It's either 10G, 1G or 100M, and nothing in between. I didn't notice that myself before.

Oh ! OK I get it. That is an issue. Then I will need also a second 2.5gb card as I want the 10gb card to connect to the router.

edit So I ordered a second 2.5Gb card for the NAS.

The computer will be connected to internet with the 10gb card and to the NAS with the 2.5Gb card.

You can fit an 8x card in a 16x slot, but you need to make sure that the slot is either wired or configured for 8x or higher as some PCI-e 16x slots might only be wired for 4x or could be configured for lower then 16x due to the lack of PCI-e lanes available to the system.
