In a nutshell, I'm in a quest of finding a good-enough router with some 'advanced' QoS for prioritizing game/call traffic, VLAN for guest segmentation, and maybe ALS. It has to be gigabit as my internet later on will be on 150 Mbps. The picks are as below for now:

  • Mikrotik RB750GR3 (~60$)
  • Ruijie Reyee RG-EG105G-V3 (~63$)
  • Suprisingly found a cheapo secondhand OpenWRT router of JCG Q20 (~14$)

Yet, for the best-bang-of-the-buck, which one that I should pick? I know for the best reliability the Mikrotik/Reyee would be a choice but... Does OpenWrt could be as reliable as the others too as it's so darn cheap than the others?

The JCG Q20 has less ports than the others but.. With device that cheap I can substitute of a easy smart switch like Ruijie Reyee RG-ES208GC by using trunk.

Devices that it will connect to:

  • 2 PCs on gigabit LAN
  • Estimated 4-6 phones, might be some additional phones on guest Wi-Fi
  • 2 IP CCTV
  • 1 laptop running Linux server (my NAS, media server)
  • Few IoT devices

They all use the same SoC so it's really a matter of what interface you're most comfortable with.  Personally, for me it's MikroTik.  Robust and reliable.  Well supported, large community of enthusiasts but requires networking know-how.  I wouldn't gamble with the overseas brands.
