Considering updating from Windows 10 to Steam OS (Desktop) instead of Windows 11, or paying for security updates.

With windows 10 to be soon discontinued, that leaves the problem of what to do, of course I could splurge and continue to use Microsoft which dwells deeper into concerning territory. I also understand the Linux concept, even though whenever it comes to installing programs I nearly lose my mind. In the past I have used Ubuntu and Pi OS on my non primary desktops. But my primary computer has always used Windows 10, I love windows 10, but I don't want to pay more to keep using it. Upon seeing the several Linux challenges on the channel and the rapid development in Linux gaming for devices like the steam deck, I can't help but wonder, whether this is something I might desire. I almost entirely prefer the console experience particular Nintendo, but could never consider buying an Xbox Series X and every PlayStation on the planet, and of course the latest hardware from Nintendo, Alarmo.

But I use this PC for more then just games, Firefox is an absolute must, Epic games launcher so I can play many of my games, and I require support of the Microsoft suite for work and if Adobe would allow it Creative Cloud.

The problem I fear is game support I have listed my games and system in the bottom. My major question is will the games I play work in Steam OS.

Please and thank you.

Linux won't really work for you, if you need the microsoft suite and adobe programs. I recommend using a debloater like reviOS or something similar if you are going to use windows 11, i've had no problem with it myself after using it for over a year

I'd skip steamOS and go with a major linux distro like Ubuntu,Debian,Fedora or others if you want linux on generic hardware. I don't see how steamOS would be better here.

Epic games, Adobe, MS office and others don't have great linux versions so if those are important Linux isn't really a option.

You can dual boot/VM linux to get a feel for it and what works.

If you don't need all the games support look at macOS as it supports Adobe CC and MS office and is a bit better privacy wise.

Win 10 security updates helps, but Software will stop supporting Win 10 pretty soon most likely so if you need current versions of stuff like Adobe CC, you kinda have to upgrade to 11 sooner or later or go mac.

Windows 11 is going to be the best option for you. It's also not bad, It's been out for long enough most if not all of the issues people had with it have been remedied, it's basically just 10 with an updated UI.

You can use Microsoft Office Online if you don't do anything extremely demanding with Office. Adobe is a no go though, you will need to keep a Windows partition for that.

Gaming shouldn't be an issue, most of what I'm seeing on this list should work OOTB. To be sure check ProtonDB, Lutris and AreWeAnticheatYet websites. Oh and btw, since you have an AMD GPU you should also get a nice performance boost on Linux. 🙂

Asus Zephurs Duo 2023:

CPU: 7945HX

GPU: 4090M

OS: BazziteOS
