How to check my 13700K signs of degradation?

Hi guys.

I own 13700K that I purchased new 3 months ago.

I don't use that PC often, even if I do use it is mostly for gaming where max CPU usage is 15%.

Games run normal and fine.

I have not updates BIOS of MoBo to most recent one just simply that last time I did that I bricked my MoBo.

Are there specific tests to check for 13/14 gen CPU degradation which I could run?

Please do not take offence for my apparent confusion or rudeness,it's not intent me to be like that,it's just my BPD,be nice to me,and I'll return twice better,be rude and usually I get easly pissed of...I'll try to help anyone here,as long as it's something I dealt with, and even if you think I'm rude or not polite, forgive me,  it's not me it's my BPD.

Thanks for understanding.

If you don't update the BIOS then anything you do to test for degradation runs the risk of causing more degradation.

ASUS B650E-F GAMING WIFI + R7 7800X3D + 2x Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30-36-36-76  + ASUS RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) Backup: GL.iNet GL-X3000/ Spitz AX Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz) WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz)
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~1200Mbit down, 115Mbit up, variable)

If it works, why fix it??

Are you insisting to not upgrade? It works for now, and after a while it won't if it keeps degrading. Please update.

Intel fucked up the microcode on those modern CPUs. Updating the BIOS will ensure you don't kill your CPU.

Don't tell me to upgrade. I would've done so if I could.

@frozensun

Every CPU keeps degrading. Even without the actual degradation problem, your CPU will have been degraded, it's just that it is happened just ever so slightly, so it shouldn't be a problem in a short time span. Just think about this degradation problem as taking a significant amount of health from your CPU. If it still works, it still has some life.

So there is no real way to see if it has suffered the actual degradation problem, but, you might be able to catch if your CPU has been degraded to the point of failure. Just run stress tests. Both synthetic, and those who generate random loads. Also, try running those workloads which are known to crash on Intel's affected CPUs. I don't remember what they where, but maybe something like compiling shaders on the Last of Us P1? You should check.

Additionally, if you think that your CPU has been degraded, then just go and request an RMA and be successful contributor for the down fall of Intel by eating up their money, albeit 0.000001%.

You need to update the bios and use one of Intel's profile to make sure it won't degrade in nearby future.

You don't want to mess with Intel's RMA process.....

Ok then I will have to flash BIOS then.

I read this manual, I own Asus Strix z690-f.

So do I plug USB drive into any of the USB ports?

I have one specific port named BIOS.

First of all please check if Windows Bitlocker is disabled and your disc is fully decrypted.

Those updating bios with Bitlock enabled usually regret their life choices....

Follow the manual, with Asus it usually want to update Intel ME and some other Asus thing aswell so after a bios update it restarts and update next thing. Just let it do its thing until it prompts you to enter bios settings.

Once in bios settings after the update check if it's using one of Intel's profiles.

Okay.

Plug USB flash drive in any of the USB ports or port marked BIOS?

Read the manual for that motherboard.

I have a different Asus board. For me it just worked with any usb port.

Judging by the manual that particular USB port is only for USB flashback function, it is not particullary written where to plug USB pen drive.

Bios flashback is for when you need to recover a "bricked" bios, when the bios is corrupt for example.

Put the usb stick in another port, go into the bios and use the bios update tool from there.

With the bios update tool you'll have to browse to the usb stick where the bios file is located and select it.

Make sure it's the correct bios, for the correct motherboard.

Once I bricked the AsRock MoBo.

Don't want that to happen again.

That is why I am so cautious.

Do I need to rename file with Bios renamer before update?

Testing Your CPU

Before you update your BIOS, please test your CPU to see how it currently performs.

  1. Download and run HWiNFO64. Download and Prime 95 with small FFTs for 1 hour for the stress test.
  2. Take a screenshot of the results.
  3. Download and install PCMark. Run the tests.
  4. Screenshot results.
  5. If you don't have a separate graphics card: Download and install Furmark, Unigine Superposition, Cinebench 2024, or 3DMark, and run the GPU-related tests.
  6. Screenshot results.

Updating BIOS

  1. Download the BIOS update and ME to the same folder.
  2. Run ME, and the update file name will be changed.
  3. Put the file on a USB drive.
  4. Restart.
  5. Press delete to enter BIOS.
  6. Press F7 to exit easy mode.
  7. Go to Tools and choose the EZ BIOS flash (whatever the name is).
  8. Insert the flash drive if you took it out before restarting.
  9. Select it from the list of devices.
  10. Select the file.
  11. Allow the update.
  12. Wait.
  13. Taa-daa! You're done.

To see what has changed with your CPU after the update, redo the test instructions, then compare the before and after screenshots.

Ok thank you for this detailed explanation.

I see many tuts on yt guys update the BIOS without renaming the file.

What is the difference?

Is the rename necessary?

Are they making a mistake?

I see they just copy the file to usb pen drive without renaming.

Bitlock is a disc encrypter.

It's meant to protect your data against physical theft, as in if someone break into your home and pick out the drives from your pc.

With Bitlock enabled it would detect when the drive suddenly get used on another pc, and it will lock the theif out, forcing the theif to type long decryption keys unique to that drive. Those decryption keys are availible on your Microsoft account, or if you created an usb with keys on them, or printed out the keys.

When updating bios, Bitlock get triggered beliving the drive is in another pc, and will lock you out.

If you don't have the decryption keys then there's no recovery. Sometimes the Bitlock decryption keys are not found in the Microsoft account website, especially if you're only logging in on a local account.

It depends on the brand. For Asus, it is required.

There are multiple BIOSes for any one brand, sometimes because one was replaced by another and other times because the default BIOS can't do what they want, I suppose.

I have the TG H670 Pro and that is how it is done on that one.  YMMV

On the website is written like this:

"Before running the USB BIOS Flashback tool, please rename the BIOS file (SZ690F.CAP) using BIOSRenamer."

I am not using BIOS flashback option.

I am updating BIOS in normal way.

BIOS flashback is when updating without CPU I suppose.I have CPU in socket.
