Does this website have an unlimited storage? If it does, it can be abused and it needs to be fixed!

Hi,

After making my first post, I uploaded some files via private message. Now I visited my account again and they are still there.

To whoever runs this website, this can be taken advantaged of and it should be fixed. Attached file has to be 20MB and it has to be only one, but there isn't to be a limit on the amount of messages you can send, so you can just send an indefinite amount of 20MB files (assuming this has no limit burgers!). Hey Linus I'm sorry for wasting your precious server space, if it's only 70MB I consumed! Perhaps I can pay you back in gold fecal nuggets. Although the download speed is kinda slow, it is unlimited storage.

Anyways, this seems like something that can be abused and I feel like this needs to be pointed out.

You don't know if there is a limit.. you only used 70MB. That's nothing.

The size limit and number of files is the security measure for preventing abuse.

One single file at a time with a 20mb limit would make this site slightly worse than any free email service from 20 years ago. Nobody who has ever used any other means of file sharing would consider this a viable option

There are most likely daily and weekly backups, so a sharp increase in the file size of the backup between days would be quickly noticed.

Storage is cheap, better to be more lenient and let the user do his thing

This is normal, because some old posts with pictures can stay relevant regardless of age, like build logs or "show of your PC" thread, etc.

Things aren't also completely secure, as I do believe once certain data becomes X amount years old, it might get wiped out, because it isn't relevant/needed anymore, things like screenshots in comments.

Either way, it's not a reliable way to store files either, due to few limitations, like accessibility, and uploaded pictures get compressed reducing their quality.

So you're going to take hundreds of TB of data and chop it into 20MB files and let it sit there or something?

If someone dumps a ton of data the admins likely can see a sudden spike in data use and where it goes and address it.

Edit:

Additionally the forum has been up for over 10 years, if there was rampant abuse they'd have reigned it in.

Did you know that when you're on the road someone can just drive across the middle line and kill you, there's also nothing stopping someone from simply shooting you any old time they feel like it, or buying a lovely apple pie and just throwing it in the bin.

This world is already wrapped up in protective padding enough for the idiots who want to ruin it for the rest of us. When you learn responsibility you'll see that it's a much better method of prevention. Responsibility (self governance) that is, not the protective padding.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

That's it. I'm going to segment my entire 60TB plex library into 20mb chunks and store it here!

I kindly ask that you don't abuse this and spoil it for everyone. We have banned people (and deleted their files!) for flagrant abuse of this in the past.

Yes, that is what I'm talking about! Please patch this quickly or tell Linus_Sebastian to fix this!! Whichever is the best way. These bradders and sistars keep saying it doesn't matter, but I said in the post it is unlimited storage (I assume) regardless!!!

Like... I wouldn't trust this website to store all my negative opinions on Narendra Modi...

NOOO, my offsite backup!!

Speaking of which, is there anyway we could get TWO forums please? That way I can have independent backups when I upload ALL of my data here...in 20mb chunks.

It will take some time, and some would say Backblaze is easier and cheaper in that it won't take me a ridiculous amount of manhours to deconstruct all my files...but the forum...

It's been a while since I've dug through the settings of an Invision Community powered forum, however I do recall default settings restricting a limit on users by their assigned forum group. There was also an unlimited checkbox but this would have to be deliberately turned on. Unless it was intended, by default there is a limit.

Make sure you make a vlog series about it.
I kinda want to watch the whole thing.

It will be a boring but fun (in a way) series i think

Better yet, take your 60TB backup, break it up into 20MB packets, then upload a random selection of one-to-three 20MB packets every day until you have completed the backup. Flawlessly undetectable. Definitely possible within the current expected human life time....

Dreaming of the day when my brain cell doesn't betray me.

In my previous post, I talked about how there isn't to be a limit of the amount of message you can send to yourself in this website, that each message can have an attached file of 20MB, and how I wanted Linus or whoever runs this website to fix this issue. To my dissatisfaction, people did not take this seriously, and I even got a warning to not abuse this, even though I am just pointing this out!!

Instead, I went from storing 70MB in the website's server to 4.12GB in total as a test. It was successful.
image.thumb.png.41def224c05fe0a04bf78cc407ff22b8.png

I took an ISO in 4.12GB file size and broke it to 20MB chunks using WinRAR, and it took 2 hours to send manually!

Here are my discoveries so far:

1. Direct download links expire in 20 minutes

The link of an attached file (ex. https://linustechtips.com/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=967258&key=2bedd49241a1dfbdcf12996602027bdd) will lead to the direct download link of:

[https://s3.ca-central-1.wasabisys.com/pbs-prod.linustechtips.com/monthly_2024_10/SDBHV4.part173_rar.4c3ad9e1300ac8060f1af7d6e1d8c832?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=JLPMOEKPYZTC3TJ0XZTE/20241015/us-east-1/s3/aws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20241015T120135Z&X-Amz-Expires=1200&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&response-content-disposition=filename="SDBH%20V4.part173.rar"&X-Amz-Signature=f2cb902fc495016309e876adb73c39202c0eb578ae46bc1ea61ba2b57cdab38f]

Notice the text in green "X-Amz-Expires=1200" It means the link will expire in 1200 seconds and it will have another new link after expiration.

Since this website does not delete accounts after long period of inactivity (Just look at how many inactive accounts last seen 5, 10 years ago), this means files will be here forever unless the users are banned or Linustechtips.com fixes this now!!!

If you compare this to Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive, both will delete your account after two years of inactivity. However, for OneDrive, it will remain active as long as your Microsoft account has some money, was used to spend money, has debt, or an active OneDrive cloud subscription. Google, on the other hand, this company will delete your account after 2 years of inactivity EVEN if you have a paid subscription!

2. Linustechtips.com uses Wasabisys.com's cloud storage!!!

3.
 Slow upload and download speed

My internet speed is 30MB/s in download and 9.6MB/s in upload:

image.png.f7fa7023495ba12bb588d298e3f7f91b.png

Upload speed when uploading a file in the website:

image.png.7aa7e1fdbed478812b345d7528ab60a3.png

Download speed when downloading a file in the website:

image.png.54351f691d940fee4242c9dfbae9a7c5.png

Conclusion:

It is a problem! Please fix this unlimited storage now!!!!!!!

I appreciate you taking the time to report this, however this is not considered an issue. We are aware that there is a high limit set for total user uploads. This is an intended feature. The benefit this feature provides to users far exceeds the insignificant incidents of misuse (insignificant both in occurrences and disruption caused). Setting a lower total limit per user would be ineffective at preventing intentional abuse of file uploads and would provide a worse experience to legitimate users.

User upload usage may be monitored and users found to be exploiting uploads may be (and in exceptionally rare cases have been) banned and their uploads deleted. We kindly ask that you do not attempt to abuse this feature, with the reasoning being that banning the exceptionally few people who exploit it is a better solution than making the feature worse for everybody.

Hello bradder, thanks for clarifying that this is not an issue after all! It's just that I don't want this website to be used to store their files and wasting Linus Sebastian's money in paying for storage cost! I only did it as a test bro!!!

I don't think most people would be using this website for storage when there's significantly better options available such as:
