I Tried Your Darkest PC Fantasies

AdamFromLTT

Seriously, don't try any of this stuff at home. Don't delete system 32, don't put thermal paste in the CPU socket. Don't spray water on your computer. Don't blast your computer with x-rays for 5 hours. Just don't do it. Let us do it.

i just want to mention this because i've seen it happen: several customers i've dealt with had their laptop lock up in the specific situation where it was set to sleep mode as they went trough airport security. it might have been a fluke several times in a row, but i've heard the story enough to imply that not every laptop might deal with being x-rayed.

in all cases just disconnecting the battery for a minute fixed the issue.

What was fun for me with this was comparing your results with mine, for example every time I have unplugged my SSD it has bluescreen fairly quickly, and once unplugging one but not 2 sticks of RAM, it had a bunch of glitchy pixels instead of rebooting.

If a post resolved/answered your question, please consider marking it as the solution. If multiple answers solved your question, mark the best one as answer.

For radiation: Most electronic components can take a few Gray  (a dosis that would kill you within days) before giving up/the electronics start acting weirdly.

Flash storage itself is also surprisingly resilient to radiation exposure.

I don't  know how strong the source of the Lumafield is but likely the half a day LTT had it in there isn't even close to where the issues start.

Btw. There is a high chance that after this the laptop was slightly radioactive for a few days. Just saying.

People never go out of business.

My darkest PC fantasy: On a scale of 1-10 how much thermal paste is enough.

me: YES

What about compressing the C drive?  I unfortunately already know what happens but I wonder if modern machines will even let you or if the cpu is powerful enough to handle it.  I did this on our IBM Aptiva Pentium 200mhz WITH MMX lol, yeah I learned a lot on that computer, clicked every button that could be clicked.

I did it, but on a smaller spool just so I wouldn't waste half a spool of solder

So a cold LCD display is "slower". Is a warmer display faster? Can you get faster higher refresh rate? How warm above the recommended 50 °C can you go? 🔥
