Need advice on parts to upgrade my PC (I already have a base idea)

I didn't yes 🙂

About the change to a 5700X3D or 5800X3D. The first one gives me like 15% improvement comparing to my Ryzen 5 3600 with a price point of around 200$, it doesn't seem a good investment or am I missing something?

The change to 5800X3D gives a ~25% improvement but I can't find this cpu, I just found the 5800X and XT and even those have a price point of 190$ and 300$ respectivly with, again, doesn't seem like a good investment. I know I don't need to change the board but in the near future maybe I need to change everything again...

The productivity performance of the 5700X3D is not amazing, but the gaming performance is excellent and flight sim in particular likes the X3D CPUs.

The gaming performance usually does not show up in CPU-oriented benchmarks because it comes from the cache, which is often irrelevant to such tests compared to the non-X3D CPUs.

If you already have an AM4 board there's really no point buying anything else except the 5700X3D/5800X3D for gaming, unless you can afford AM5.

Have a scoot around at specifically gaming oriented benchmarks and you can find some videos about MSFS online too.

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of collecting information about what components to choose to upgrade/change my current PC.

The main reason for this is because the current system has a very clear bottleneck (explained below) and when gaming, both the temperatures and the noise are not acceptable. This is preventing me from using the PC for gaming.

Budget (including currency):

Currently is around 1300€, I want to bring the value down without much system compromising

Country:

Portugal (but I just need an idea on the components to change)

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

My current PC has a bottleneck issue at the moment (when gaming only), because I have a Ryzen 5 3600 as CPU and an RTX3080 10Gb GPU.

I use the PC for java and web development, watch some movies, watch youtube and sometimes I want to game. I want it especially for Microsoft Flight Simulator, both 2020 and the 2024 version that comes next month.

As an example, at the moment, to play MSFS2020 I need to force the CPU fans to 80% and also the GPU fans down so that the system doesn't do too much noise that is very disturbing.

Other details:

What I have at the moment:

  • Case: NOXHummer MC
  • Power Supply: 750W or 850W (can't remember and can't see it now, I also don't know the brand is but is 80 Plus Gold)
  • Motherboard: MSI X470 GAMING PLUS MAX (MS-7B79) (AM4)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor Socket AM4 (6 cores 12 threads)
  • RAM: G.Skill 2x16Gb DDR4-2133 (1066 MHz)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB GDDR6X
  • Storage: 2x m.2 SSD, 2x 3.5'' HDD 7200rpm, 1x 2.5'' SSD
  • Monitor: DELL S2719DGF (27'', 1440p, 155Hz, 1ms)

The base components that I want to change to (based on a friend's system):

  • Case: Extended-ATX Lian Li PC-O11D Dynamic Evo Tempered Glass Black
  • Power Supply: ATX Corsair RMe Series RM1000e 1000W 80 Plus Gold Full Modular
  • Motherboard: ATX Asus Prime Z790-A WiFi Skt1700
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-14700K (14th Generation) "Raptor Lake Refresh" 20-Core 2.5GHz c/Turbo 5.6GHz 33MB Cache Skt1700
  • RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6400MHz CL32 Black
  • GPU: (no change)
  • Storage: (no change)
  • Monitor: I want to change to a 40''-42'' 4K monitor or TV (not mandatory for now)

The idea is to know what components can I change from the list of new one's so that I can keep or at least don't loose too much performance but still can drop the prices.

I don't need RGB, I don't need any fancy things (the case will be hidden from sight).

Based on my base specs, what are your suggestions?

Thank you!

Why can't you just buy a 5800X3D? It will be more than enough for now, probably even another gpu upgrade. Is the noise coming from the CPU cooler, or GPU? If the case has no airflow, getting a new case will fix the problem for way cheaper than an entirely new build. You should also buy an SSD, HDDs are painful to run your OS on

It doesn't make sense to switch to a potentially broken 14700K and then be stuck on a dead socket. I'd just get a 5700X3D or 5800X3D, for your current motherboard, along with a new/better CPU cooler like a freezer 36, peerless assassin or phantom spirit.

If you ARE determined to change, I'd be looking at a 7800X3D or 9800X3D on AM5, not a 14700K.

I will take a look at that option but shouldn't I also change the RAM? My board only supports DDR4 so maybe I don't need to change right? I would change the case, yes, that is a must for me. About the HDDs, I'm using a m.2 for the OS and another one for software installation. The HDDs are only for file backups.

What do you mean with potentially broken 14700k? It's already not current? About the cooler, yes, I will definitely change it.

Intel are releasing Arrow Lake soon and that will be on a new socket.

I'm guessing you have not seen any tech news for a month or two?

Changing to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D (that I can get for ~430$), implies changing the board. In the end I think I will spend around the same price.

Now I'm more uncertain of what to do. Maybe change board, cpu and ram but go to AMD instead of Intel, I don't know...

Ok, that is great help, when you talk about the way the benchmarks are done.

For productivity, what I have is more than enough, so, what I'm looking for is really increase of gaming performance, not so much in enhancing the graphics because I already have them currently but to do that with good temperatures and noise.

I would upgrade from a Ryzen 5 3600 to the 5800X3D so the improvements will be even better than in that video and would be a better investment to upgrade board+cpu+ram not now but later. As I said, noise, temperature and not spending a lot is my goal here, I think with your suggestion I can click those 3 boxes.

EDIT: can't find the 5800X3D anywhere, I think AMD stopped making it?!?, so the choice is the 5700X3D.

The 5800X3D is generally not worth buying anyway, because the price used to be way higher than it was justified being.

I think might be worth waiting for black friday if you can, I've seen them go pretty cheap lately in one-off deals!

Ok, but if I can get it for a similar price, it's a good deal right? The very few I saw were more than double the price of the 5700X3D

Yeah, for similar or a bit more that's all good, but paying double would be madness.

Hi,

I already bought the Lian Li O11 EVO case, an Arctic cooler for the CPU, and some fans from Lian Li as well (I'll have 10 in total, including the 3 from the cooler).

I'm keeping the AM4 motherboard and RAM for now.

But regarding the CPU, I was going to buy the 5700X3D, but now I'm unsure if it's worth going for the 5900XT instead. What do you think?

Edit: Ok, I found some reviews and for gaming the 5700X3D is better. Also, the price is almost half of the 5900XT so I will definitely go for the 5700X3D.

Yep, you'd only buy the 5900XT if you really need those extra cores, in which case the sacrifice on gaming performance from the 5700X3D might be worth it.
