Laptop Options For Computer Science Studies

Hello, hope you all are having a great day!

I'm in a bit of a pickle, I need to buy a laptop. I hoped that I could manage without one in my studies, but It seems harder and harder as time goes on. Now my budget isn't exactly great and as of now I can only take a computer out on a installment loan. Therefore I guess there isn't a strict budget, but i would prefer not to go over 1000 Euro.

As I already have a stationary PC that can handle the games I like, I really need the laptop to be mainly optimized for programming and studies, although, if possible, wouldn't mind it having a bit of gaming capability.

Now, while I do somewhat understand the PC market, the Laptop market makes no sense to me. I cant understand what is a good price or deal, or what will give me the performance I need.

One laptop i've found currently is: HP Pavilion 16-ag0006ny

From url: HP Pavilion 16-ag0006ny - LMT

Main specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 8540U

RAM: 16gb DDR5 6400Mhz

SSD: 512GB Gen4 NVMe M.2

It also has 16 inch monitor and it seems like decent battery life, although im not sure. It only doesnt have a dedicated GPU, but again, thats more of an cherry on top not a requirement. What do you guys think about this option?

I live in Latvia, so there are quite a few sites that are off limits because of delivery costs and similar reasons.

Here are some links for local dealers:

Laptops - LMT

💻 Portatīvie datori (spēlēm, darbam, mācībām) | RD Electronics (rdveikals.lv)

Portatīvie datori | Ksenukai.lv

And also ebay, as long as it ships to Latvia and doesn't cost a fortune to do so.

I apologies if some of those dealers don't provide English option.

Any helpful information would be appreciated, thank you!

Sveiki! A fellow latvian I assume? Well I'm studying Computer Systems, but I'll have mostly the same stuff as IT for the first two years. I'm not entirely sure what I want to specialize in after I finish University, so for now I need a laptop that is well suited for programming and general study tasks. Of course, would be nice if its comfortable to use.

Does rdveikals work for you?

https://www.rdveikals.lv/products/lv/150/615671/sort/5/filter/0_0_0_0/ExpertBook-B5-B5602CBA-L20617X-16-OLED-i5-1240P-8GB-512SSD-EN-W11Pro-portatīvais-dators.html

But you will need to add more ram (1 free slot)

Here's specs https://www.asus.com/laptops/for-work/expertbook/expertbook-b5-oled-b5602-12th-gen-intel/techspec/

Oled screen with 400 nits, full cover coverage, those budget laptops in lmt store have screens that are too dim and colors are trash (45% NTSC)

Other bonuses, great build quality and port selection

Yeah, rdveikals is fine.

Do you think I would get much benefit from an OLED? I understand that they are beautiful screens, but I'm not sure that image quality is exactly my first priority at the moment. Also it seems that the CPU's have quite a similar performance (Intel i5-1240P vs AMD Ryzen 5 8540U). Thanks for the offer, but I would sacrifice image quality for overall performance, of course, to a certain limit.

At the moment, due to my budget, my main focus is:

  • Powerful CPU
  • 16GB of fast RAM
  • Capable integrated GPU (dedicated would also be nice, if its within budget and still a good deal)
  • Good monitor size (I'm not entirely sure what i mean with "good", but I guess roughly 14 - 16 inches)
  • Decent battery life (We have frequent charging options, so this isn't a dealbreaker)
  • Comfortable to use

So, maybe I missed something, but overall these are the main scores by which I would judge a device. Anything else comes in secondary after these.

Then you could get same model laptops from RDveikals but with 8840u for same price, IGPU should be 2-3x faster.
