It has been some time since we had higher participating requirements for Folding Month. As always I endeavour to ensure we can include as many participants as possible, but as the march of technological progress continues unimpeded, we must adapt to the changing landscape. This will be the toughest folding month yet, not only because of our higher requirements of "30 Days with activity*, 1,000,000 Points & 50 WU" produced over the five weeks of the event. But also because we are at the dying end of an upgrade cycle, meaning there are no new and shiny tech in the hands of a select few. Instead, the best (consumer) folding hardware ever made has been available on the market for quite some time. That means anyone who wants them, already has them. In the recent midweek sprint you all showed just what you can do. Now the question is to be asked, can you maintain that for a whole five-week marathon?

I've been bringing these events to you on a regular basis for the better part of the decade. Many people have come and gone from the team over those seven years. From legends like Den-Fi, to the sad loss of Marknd59, who is no longer with us. He talked frequently about his brain cancer diagnosis to me over the year or so that we spoke. He lived not far from me, and we always intended to meet up but life got in the way. You know how it goes. He once told me, "I don't do this for me, I'm already fucked, but I do it so hopefully someday someone else doesn't have to go through this". I don't even need to go back into our old messages to remember that, it is burned into my mind. So this year, I hope you will all join me, in folding not for ourselves, not even for LTT, but for humanity.

Heres to Mark!

Folding@home is a global network of volunteer computers working in unison to support cutting-edge biomedical research, all with the aim of advancing our understanding and developing treatments for a wide range of diseases, such as Alzheimer's, cancer, and Parkinson's. The primary focus of this research is to simulate the 'folding' process of proteins within the human body. Protein folding is a vital process, as the shape of a protein directly influences its ability to perform specific functions. When proteins are produced in the body, they must fold into the correct structure to carry out their tasks effectively. However, when this folding process goes awry, it can result in numerous diseases, including various forms of cancer and neurological conditions. By studying how proteins fold and, more importantly, how they misfold, Folding@home contributes to understanding the root causes of these diseases, helping to pave the way for new treatments and therapies for conditions linked to faulty proteins.

How It Works

Distributed Computing

FAH harnesses the processing power of individual users' computers, which download small portions (or "work units") of a larger simulation. Each machine processes its work unit and sends the results back to FAH servers.

Protein Folding

Proteins are chains of amino acids that fold into specific shapes to function correctly. When proteins misfold, it can lead to diseases. FAH simulates the folding process to study how and why these errors occur.

Volunteer Participation

Anyone can contribute to FAH by installing the software on their computers or gaming consoles (it was even available on the PlayStation 3 for a time). When the computer is idle or under low use, it runs simulations in the background.

Scientific Impact

Over the years, FAH has contributed to important scientific breakthroughs, publishing numerous papers and advancing research into various diseases. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the FAH network was used to simulate potential drug targets for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

To qualify for badges you must meet the minimum requirements for participation which for this event will be as follows minimum requirements: 1M points,50WUs, and 30 days of activity over the course of the whole 5 weeks. As always, this is subject to change for future events as we find out what the sweet spot is to include as many people as possible but not make it too easy to just get a free entry for prizes.

PASSKEYS! (they're really important)

Don't forget to get yourself a passkey from the link below to ensure that you hit the points requirement, the passkey is a feature that was added a while ago to the Folding Client that helps to authenticate each user on the network, an added bonus of this is the fact that it allows you to qualify for QRB(Quick Return Bonus) Points, QRBs are extra points you earn for submitting work units more quickly, such as if you have faster hardware or let the client fold full time, rather than on idle. QRB credit is awarded after 10 WUs have been submitted. You can get your passkey from the link below.

https://apps.foldingathome.org/getpasskey

This is just a PSA for the new guys here, the folding team is a small close-knit community, so here's a few things I'd like you all to keep in mind. It doesn't hurt to say thank you, if someone has genuinely helped you out don't forget to drop a reaction on their posts, help others wherever you can and finally we are a team first and always.

Check your stats out here! Bear in mind it can take some time for your first WUs to appear so leave it a day or two.

Reading about what Mark had to go through, I feel it’s only right to keep folding so others don’t have to endure the same.

See you all in November!

I'm in 🙂

I might be experienced, but I'm human and I do make mistakes. Trust but Verify! Expand for common PC building advice, a short bio and a list of my components and other tech. I edit my messages after sending them alot, please refresh before posting your reply. Please try to be clear and specific, you'll get a better answer. Please remember to mark solutions once you have the information you need.

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. PCs are one of my hobbies and I've built many PCs and performed upgrades on a few laptops (for myself, friends and family). My personal computers include 3 windows (10/11) machines and a TrueNAS server (and I'm looking to move to dual booting Linux Mint on my main machine in future). While I believe I have an decent amount of experience in spec’ing, building and troubleshooting computers, keep in mind I'm not an expert or a professional and I make mistakes.

@GOTSpectrum I just wonder if you did not make same mistake like last Folding Month. Because Folding Months are usually 35 days. But your dates would make it 36 days.

That being said, I would not mind to fold that extra day. 😄
