Choice of NAS + Jellyfin migration

Hi, I've been thinking about getting a NAS to store my films and shows on, since it's taken up a lot of my internal PC storage.

Of course I've looked at the Synology DS423+ but I don't think I could ever justify that price, so I've been eying the TerraMaster F4-210 instead as it does seem a way more reasonable price (£200 vs £500).

My question is, has anyone tried this NAS for Jellyfin and know if it's any good for streaming films? (Most of my stuff is 1080p, and like one 2k film).

(I'm also not entirely sure what drives would be best/suitable to buy, I was just planning on throwing an old Toshiba P300 (3TB) as well).

Additionally, is there a way to easily migrate my PC's Jellyfin over (like keep all settings and stuff).

Thanks in advance for any help with this, I'm new to NAS stuff.

The TerraMaster's are a good value; just keep in mind the ARM based NAS do not do hardware transcoding. It will be fine for native playback (Direct Stream) of 1080p however if you have any uncompressed video that needs to be transcoded (e.g AVC to X264); or you want to do 4K playback you're going to have issues.

As far as migration. You just take your app data and copy it over. For the likes of Plex, Emby, Jellyfin they use the same appdata formats between the different OS's. Just make sure you only copy over the actual "user data" like databases, thumbnails, cache, etc...

I see, I don't actually know if any of my files are uncompressed or not, so that might be an issue.

Seems like this is just gonna be a thing I have to bite the bullet on and get the Synology when I can.

Also I wasn't aware the migration was that easy lol, thanks

Thanks for your help 😄

Another option is to build a custom NAS from a refurbished commercial PC. I have one built from HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF with a Pentium G4600 processor, capable of 4K HEVC transcoding, and with overall costs (except storage) well under $100. It supports Windows, so that you would need negligible work to migrate; just copy the directory Jellyfin works on, and plug the drive in.☺️
