PC black screen/restart during heavy load

maurg

From time to time while playing some games, lately Dyson Sphere Program and 7 days to dis, the screen either goes black and hangs the video, sounds in general keep working for some time until the computer fully stops working, other times the computer simply restarts. Undervolting the GPU seems to help with the issue but i can't guarantee it never happened.

My suspicions are that the GPU is bad or the PSU is not handling the load well.

My specs are:

  • Windows 10 Home 64 bit
  • ASUS PRIME X570-P version 5013 (03/22/2024)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D
  • 2x16GB GSkill RipJaws RAM (DDR4-3600MHz XMP profile 1)
  • PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
  • ADATA SX8200 - 1Tb M.2
  • Antec EarthWatts Pro Modular 80+ Gold (2017)

Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

I'd check your CPU and GPU temps, make sure it's not overheating first as it's a pretty simple check. But to me it sounds like the PSU is bad, crashing/restarting on load is most commonly overtemperature or a power issue. If you still have issues after those two have been tested then I'd test the GPU.

The #1 Windows tool I recommend when a computer restarts randomly is Event Viewer. It can log what occurred before a restart happens. It may be worth looking at, as it may log high CPU temps or unusual voltage.

It also sounds like the Graphic driver crashing and not recovering/restarting. I recommend updating your graphics driver and if that doesn't work, i recommend a program called DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). The DDU program will uninstall all graphics drivers other than the windows default ones. This process will allow for you to install new drivers without the worry of old files that may be causing issues being there.

If that doesn't work and you begin to think that it's a Power Supply issue, I would contact Antec. Antec supposedly provides a 7 year warranty, and if you bought the PSU in 2017 then you may be able to replace it for a low price (shipping) or free.

Thanks for the replies,

Checking the temps, under load the GPU does not go over 74°C while the hotspot hovers around 92-94°C. The CPU stays around 60°C.

About event viewer, the only error i see around the time of the last crash is:

The AMDRyzenMasterDriverV17 service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

which google points me to the following reddit post,

So, im gonna try that and keep monitoring the temps and hope it no longer crashes.

It's Good to see that the Event Viewer did log something. I would follow the steps from the reddit post after installing the latest AMDRyzenMasterDriver. I would also still recommend updating the GPU Drivers. Let us know how it goes!

My X570-P experiences stability issues and second m.2 drive disappearances whenever the CMOS battery drops to 2.9V or lower. The first time it happened I thought one of my drives got faulty and I RMA-d the drive. With a new drive form a different manufacturer the issue persisted so I had to check everything and found the culprit - the battery measured 2.3V (but it kept the Bios settings). New battery - problem solved. That issue reappeared a few weeks back and I exactly knew what it was.

As a short update, drivers updated, reddit posts followed and another crash just happened. I'm doing a full reinstall of all drivers and checking the battery as suggested above. If neither work i will attempt the PSU support since it is still under warranty.

Probably last update. First, thanks for all the help and suggestions.

In short, i did everything suggested including a fresh install of all drivers i could think off and updating every driver that can be updated. Checked the CMOS battery, it is charged at 3.25V, monitored temperatures to check if in range and it never went over 74 degrees for the GPU.

As of now, im contacting Antec to check if there is anything that can be done PSU related and i will try replacing or testing another regardless of the support request.

Thanks again.
