Does my laptop support 2TB nvme and PCIe Gen 4? If so, need help with choosing.

qirt765

I have an Ideapad 5-14ITL05 laptop with a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB nvme. I am looking to upgrade my nmve to a 2TB one. After looking at聽 https://psref.lenovo.com/WDProduct/ideapad/ideapad_5_14itl05?tab=spec , I do not see any reference to a PCIe gen 4 (only 3 x4) and i see that only a maximum of 1TB is supported but does a 2TB nvme work just fine (* 1.聽The storage capacity supported is based on the test results with current Lenovo庐 storage offerings. The system may support larger storage as the technology develops.)?

If 2TB works fine, what nmve sdd should I buy?
My current choices are one of these (assuming the laptop can use PCIe 4):
1) Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB (about 175 euro)

2) Western Digital Black SN850X With Heatsink (about 179 euro)
3) Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD 2TB (about 155 euro, direct storage upgrade)
4) Western Digital Black SN850X (157 euro)

Any other suggestion for the price range of 120-185 euro is appreciated 馃檪
General requirements:
1) Same/Better/Unnoticeable performance

2) Very reliable

Sidenote: Does a heatsink on the ssd matter for a laptop?

Thank you

Found a video of dissasembly, you only have one NVME slot. And yes, it's only a gen 3 slot.
I would honestly just contact lenovo and ask them what SSD would be supported in your system, but unless I'm missing something, you can just put a 2tb gen 3 ssd and call it a day. I think the only question would be if the SSD fits if it has chips on both sides, thus not being able to fit in the nvme slot.
Usually laptops arent covered in a heat sink, they just rely on the cooling of the laptop. It probably would cause some clearence issues because of the added metal plates.

That simply means it is the largest capacity they have tested, but there are no technical reasons why something larger might not work. They simply didn't bother to test it. It's usually a good idea to check Crucial: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/lenovo/ideapad-5-14itl05

They offer 2 TB NVMe as an upgrade for that model, so you should be fine. Note that these are PCIe 4.0 NVMe, even though the system itself will be limited to PCIe 3.0 speeds. Likely it makes almost no difference in terms of price.

You generally don't notice any difference between PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0 NVMe in everyday tasks. It's mostly beneficial if you copy a lot of data between systems using equally fast network (meaning 40 GbE or higher).

An NVMe with a built-in heatsink isn't going to fit inside the laptop. The laptop's slot should provide adequate cooling.

Thanks for the responses. They have been very helpful 馃檪
I am thinking of buying a Western Digital Black SN850X W/o Heatsink SSD 2TB M.2 NVMe PCI Express 4.0 (about 157 euro) or a Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe (about 173 euro). What would be recommended one?
Feel free to suggest others at that price point if you have any.

Here are reviews (I hope posting links is not against the rules).

Both are good enough. I personally wouldn't have spent additional money on Crucial. Also, if you're buying WD from the official website, try looking for promo codes for WD even from other countries - I think they work internationally on their official website.
