Need help with fan start/stop cycle

Cheersmate

Im currently playing an old game(Mass Effect 2)and ı noticed that my gpu fans constantly start and stop.It goes up to around 60 degrees which starts the fans and then they stop once it hits 42 degrees. Is there anyway i can change this so that it either never starts unless its too hot or once it starts it doesnt stop till ı close the game ?

This is very normal for GPU's with zero RPM mode.

I see this a lot with my 4080 as well, especially in games that doesn't require much GPU power.

It will sloooooowly creep up to 60c, fans will start and stop at 42c and it repeats.  Its normal and completely fine.

Why is this something you want to change?  Are the fans bothering you?

You can set a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner, this will override the zero RPM mode.

You can also adjust so that the fans won't come on until 70c etc.

Its not that they bother  me.I have had this gpu(3060ti) for 2 years now and ıts fans had to be replaced twice already. As far as ı know the start/stop puts more wear on the fans so ıd rather they just kept spinning.

Then MSI afterburner is a great choice! 🙂

Damn, what type of fans are you buying?  I have had multiple GPU's over the years and not a single fan has had an issue.

A curve like this with override zero fan speed with hardware curved being not selected.

The yellow line at 30% is the minimum amount of speed your fans can go.  It can be different for your GPU.

In this curve the fan speed is set to 30% all the time until 60c and then goes up, this is just to show how to set it up. Tweak to your own preference 🙂

This is also something you can just enable / toggle when you play games like Mass Effect 2 and lower demanding games.

And keep the Zero RPM mode for daily use so there is even less wear on the fans during normal web browsing 🙂

Thanks for your help.I really appreciate the screenshot too.Ill apply that curve and tweak it if necessary.

I really dont get it either.None of my friends have had issues with their gpus, they all just install it and use it for 5+years with no issues. The card had a 2 year warranty so all the fans are original MSI fans.I guess ı was just really unlucky with my product

Sounds like you got unlucky indeed 😢

My MSI 980 Ti Gaming lasted many years ( Sold it, probably still working fine )  and no problems with my MSI 4080 either... I would hope not for such an expensive card 😄

Yeah, this curve is for my RTX 4080 as the stock fan curve was extremely aggressive.  It wanted to keep the card at 60c all the time and ramped the fans up more than needed.

Now during heavy gaming I have around 70c and less fan speed / noise to keep me happy.

Tweak it if needed.

Tag me here if you have any further questions.

I set up the fan curve.Fans are currently at 40% speed at 40 degrees.I got a question with how to turn it off.So when ı quit the game should ı immediately turn off afterburner which reverts the fans to 0 or should ı drop their speed to 30% first and then close ? How do you do it ?

My fan curve in MSI afterburner has 0% fan mode in the curve so I don't do anything.

To turn it off you can go into the settings and click the ''Enable user defined software automatic fan control'' and uncheck it 🙂

Its a bit tedious but you only need it for lighter games right?

This is my fan curve.

My card has a very beefy cooler ( 4090 cooler on a 4080 basically ) so it never reaches more than 72c at 40-45% fan speed.

Hence the very low top end at 90c+, it will never reach this.

I like silence.

If my card were to reach more than 77c I would increase the fan speed so that it never goes above that.

77 is warm but not at all dangerous and about what I would feel comfortable with for sustained temp.  VRM's need cooling too so dont want to have too little cooling, its not just about the GPU core.

I would probably do something like this if I had a worse cooler.

Basically I would try to keep it as quiet as possible without it going above 77-80c during heavy loads.

Might take a little bit of tweaking but you get the idea.

Sure!  it all comes down to the temperatures right 🙂

I dont know how this fan curve works on your particular 3060Ti, too many variables ( room temp, case airflow, dual or triple fan cooler? ) etc.

If you get decent temps without it being audible I would say its spot on.

Anything under 80c is acceptable for 24/7 gaming in my opinion, card will start to throttle clockspeeds at 85c+.

I would also change the fan speed update period to 2000 instead of 5000.  Fan curve will be a bit smoother as it updates more often.
