Intel Iris G7/XE (96 EU) question

Hellowpplz

I was doing some pondering about whether or not the Intel Iris xe graphics have to share power? I know they can use up to 28W, but with my Laptop's cpu power limit of 40W, would it be limited based on how much power the cpu is using? Would it benefit from me setting the cpu wattage to 15W in games that don't require more than that but use it anyway, therefore releasing some power overhead for the gpu?

I edit my messages more than not –

Probably some dude on the internet

The 40 watts or whatever is the power limit of the whole package, which includes the IA cores (CPU) ,the GT cores (graphics), and other miscellaneous stuff. When your GPU is under load, it will share the power budget of your CPU as well.

maybe, but I doubt that would help. Modern systems are quite intelligent to share the power budget. You might try though.

This. So much this. The vast majority of these devices (perhaps not by sku, but certainly by number of units in the wild) are well optimized to handle these balancing acts as long as you have made sure to keep the drivers up to date

On the other hand, also this. While I personally do not derive *any* joy from tweaking and tinkering to squeeze every last drop of performance in my system (I prefer leaving some on the table in exchange for pure, mindless stability), I fully acknowledge that this is some people's bread and butter. Tweak and tinker and fiddle to your heart's content. Share what knowledge you glean.

This will matter a lot on lower end system, and more on a laptop. On my other laptop where undervolting is possible, I always do it. I also found another tweak that I could do where using ThrottleStop, I could create a key bind which toggles CPU turbo on and off. So if I was locked in PL1, I could drop the power usage significantly (as well as performance of course) and charge the turbo timer. When I need some action in the game, then I could switch turbo back on, and I will be clamped to PL2 for a while.
