Laptop screen turning black, power still on.

Spyous315

I've been having a problem with my Asus vivobook where it would the screen would turn off and then not turn on until I restart it. The problem continues after the restart, as the power wont come on until I hold down the power button until the "automatic repair tool" text comes on screen. Sometimes it wouldn't work even then, I would sometimes have to unplug my laptop for it to turn on.

If I let go of the power button during this process, the laptop shuts itself off.

This problem persisted even after a battery change, and nowadays it does this every 5 days. I'm wondering if its a motherboard issue now. The charging port also has a problem where it wouldn't charge unless the charger was pointed at a certain orientation. I've replaced the charging port too, and it worked fine for two weeks but it came back.

Help

Welcome to the forums!
Ooof, that thing is DYING. It could be the screen digitizer or the mainboard or the screen itself or the drive
How old is it?
Also, have you tried contacting Asus customer service?

Well the laptop is quite new (2 years old), but now I'm realizing the keyboard backlights don't turn on as well so I think its some sort of water damage. What do you expect the repair cost for this would be?

Is it worth the repair or should I bite the bullet and buy a new one

That's kinda middle-aged for a daily driver laptop

Might be free fiddy free if you're still in warranty. Might be 1-200$. Could be that they are charging apple prices which would be in the neighborhood of 1000$. Who knows.

That's ALL down to your price tolerance, needs, and the specs of your current one. Though I will plug the tired old refrain of "if you have the space for a desktop, they tend to be a better deal for most people" but I *will not* push it because I am not you and you get to make your own decisions.

Laptop repairs and extremely expensive. It depends on what is broken, if it is the mobo, unless you can find a cheap used one to replace it you might have to buy a new laptop.

But before you do anything I would take the laptop apart and do a visual inspection for damage.

When replacing my battery, the shop apparently did a visual inspection of the laptop but found no errors. Maybe they aren't skilled enough to identify major issues?

PLENTY of issues are non visible to the naked eye. And shop techs are *always* under time pressure.

So how would I fix a problem that isn't visible to the naked eye

Oh, I'd replace it. But there's a chance that there's a loose cable between the screen and the main board
