Searching for a new 1440p Gaming Monitor

LiquidLion

I am giving my main monitor to my dad since his broke and i need a new one. i have heard (on LTT) about these new QD OLED monitors and how they are apparently incredible and was hoping for some advice from people know about these monitors. (the purple tint doesnt matter to me and i would really enjoy the non matt finish i think). I havent bought a new monitor for years so my own knowledge is relatively basic.

Here are my specs of my current setup:
i7 8700K
64 Gb RAM
Asus rtx 3070 Noctua

Currently i have two monitors:
my main: ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q (27') (this is the one i am switching)

my secondary: Dell UltraSharp U2718Q (27')

I saw the following online and wanted to know if they are any good? & My friend recommended me one that is 32' and i was wondering if anyone here might have experience in having a 32' + 27' setup. Or if people would recommend a more "classic" 27' + 27' setup. i've always had the same size monitors so idk how such a setup "feels".

Alienware AW2724DF

Samsung Odyssey OLED G7

Samsung Odyssey OLED G8

Alienware AW3223DWF

thank you for any help or other monitor recommendations that i may have completely missed.

I had 3 24'' monitors and the head turning was too much. 2 27''+ sounds like a nightmare. I've heard people say a single 4k 32'' panel is the cherry on top right now for screen layouts, as the monitor is small enough to be all in front of you without turning your head and detailed enough to squeeze 4 worth's of monitors into the same space.

Since upgrading to a 27'' I've also downscaled to just one monitor.

If I had to vote, it'd be the 32''.

i see. i would probably keep the 2nd monitor still just for the ability to have more realestate (at least for now).

and from those monitors i mentioned (or just in general) do you have a preference for which qd oled one?
(4k would be nice but im worried that my PC wouldnt be able to push that monitor without big fps or quality reduction compared to the 1440p ones

I'd go with the latest, newest QDOLED that's the brightest. Asus has one soon coming out, a 27" 1440p one.

The thing with a 4K monitor is you can always tur down the resolution lower, play lower resolution or upscale it with no mayor loss in performance. That's what I'll do. I'm saving up for a 4K 32" QDOLED panel, Gigabyte and MSI have good offers right now and for a while play upscaled 1080/1440p to 4K on my RX6800. With a 1440p that's it, no way to "upgrade." Sure, native resolution on a native panel supposedly looks better but I'd like to see it for myself.

what are the two models from Gigabyte and MSI you're looking at? Do you know anything about the Samsung or Alienware i wrote in the original post? (Would you recommend them?)

To my knowledge the Alienware has rave reviews, the newer model that has updatable firmware at least not launch model. I don't want to recommend Samsung anymore cause I've been shafted by them with a deceptive trade in they don't want to honour. Lately they've had QA issues with other products so I dunno, if I wouldn't buy them and I'd give a preference to most other brands first right now, my recommendations would reflect that.

I've set a tracker on PCPP for my next monitor. In a sense both are basically the same, at least use same panel.

I have a 42" main monitor and a 24" side monitor. But in the past I also pretty much always had 2 different monitor sizes. I'd say it's fine. I certainly wouldn't want two 42" monitors.

As for what model is best; I'd suggest watching this video:

But keep in mind, that you'll need to take advantage of DLSS in quite a few games to get 4K to perform decently. Even so, 4K with DLSS balanced for example still looks better than going down to native 1440p or 1080p.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Ahh thanks a ton for the video. will watch it during my break at work.
So you would also recommend that I go for a 4k panel (even with my lower end PC specs) rather than a 1440p one ? Sorry I'm just not fully understanding why. Wouldnt that lead to me having really low fps in most games? (I generally either play multiplayer esports titles which are probably easy but also singleplayer games like elden ring etc).

And thanks for all the help : )

Ohhhh okay. Thanks a lot with that info about Samsung. Then I will also definitely avoid them. And Alienware are okay? Or would you recommend any other brands for this scenario? (I have had a couple monitors before but I guess I got lucky and never had any issues so I have never experienced any customer support of any of these brands.

.

the qd-oled all have their selling points, the alienware iirc is curved, the msi is the most popular.

It also depends on ur use case, if you can keep the room dark a glossy coating is bonus contrast/colors while a matte coating would be more suitable for a brighter room etc

You'll have to use DLSS for some games, and probably won't be able to use ray tracing at 4K, but other than that you should be able to hit 60 fps on high settings in most games. Elden Ring for example should easily run at 4K 60 fps, provided you turn off ray tracing. Competitive games should be easy enough to run so you can high high FPS even at 4K. And if push comes to shove, you can still use 1080p and take advantage of integer scaling.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Just about all monitors will be great. OLED space right now is extremely competitive, best time to buy really. I'd use 3 sources if I wanted reviews on a monitor I want to buy:

Monitors unboxed

RTINGS

PC Monitors
