Weird pattern from the MiniLED backlight on the 2024 Strix Scar 16

Sharan Raghav

I’ve noticed this issue ever since i purchased it, it only shows up on dimly lit scenes, and as far as I’ve seen it only shows up on HDR. The clip’s shown below are from the Dolby vision version of the Batman, running plugged with ultimate mode on, I have tried it on standard mode and it still has the same pattern. Does this have something to do with the Nebula HDR engine or is this a panel defect ? For those confused about said pattern, it’s like the black and white version of the American flag or something. Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated cause if this is an issue that needs replacing I gotta do it quick. Thank you ✌️

UPDATE: this does show up on regular UI, I see it in XTU’s dark mode when it’s full screen. I have a hunch it’s just on all the time.

It does look like its not turning off some of the dimming zones properly, combined with there not being enough of them.

Also not an expert, but I've seen one of these issues on a Razer Blade 16. There you were able to see the lines between the dimming zones, which shouldn't be happening on a quality panel. They weren't forthcoming with fixing the issue though. They just say, they replace the panel and send you an identical one back. So if all the panels have this exact issue, good luck getting it fixed.

If the brightness is stuck and it hasn't always been that way, that is a defect and shouldn't happen!

Hi,Was it your Razer laptop that had the issue ? If so was the replacement any better?

2000 zones actually translated well when it was extremely high contrast images, no noticeable blooming and that issue wasn’t there too, it’s just that specific low light scenes, gray UI in certain apps on dark mode all exhibit aforementioned pattern. I just really want to know if someone else with the same laptop faces this issue, cause the not so technically qualified ASUS reps here in India are making me look crazy due to their inadequate knowledge about their own products.

No, it was a colleague's. They send it in for repair and got a worse panel back with multiple dead pixels and the issue was worse. Then they send it in again and got one back that was about as good as the first one. That already took over two months, so they let it be afterwards.

Oh… ASUS service in India have no clue as to what display panel my laptop has they literally can’t grasp the idea of MiniLEDs switching off or on or dimming , they’re treating it as a regular LCD panel and telling me it’s normal and that’s how all the panels on “ all the laptops are “ . I kid you not the guy who showed up to my house literally said these words,” the image reflection is causing the shadow in the display “ ….he was referring to the blooming and areas where the MiniLED is off …

Well, that is unfortunate ._. Hope you can convince someone, that this is indeed a problem!
