Advice for my first m.2

Hey everyone looking at getting my first m.2 drive in the next day or two, I'm planning on moving my os and main files to it, freeing up one of my sata ssd's for more game storage as most of my games are on hdds( old 5400rpm hdds). The two options I'm looking at are the crucial p3 gen 3 1tb for 79.99, or the Kingston nv2 gen 4 1tb for 78.99. I'm leaning towards the crucial for obvious reasons, but is there a reason to consider the Kingston instead?

NV2 hasn't; gotten the best reviews, so if it's the choice between the 2... I'd opt for Crucial.

 

I'd personally look at the TeamGroup MP44L, it's affordable and a solid drive.

I had noticed the teamgroup as well when I was browsing, I may have to take another look at it

Why don't you get one of the 2TB M.2 NVMe drives for 95USD ?

Kingston NV2 is a budget NVME with technically PCIe Gen4, but in actual it's comparable to proper Gen3 speed

Based on TechTesters review, when it comes to performance it's quite on the lower scale

I do use 2TB of Kingston NV2 for mass storage for 1,5 years, and the only reason I choose it because Crucial P3 is not officially sold in my region, so Kingston is the one and only option for me (and I didn't realise to check on Amazon since I'm used to checking on local market place instead of Amazon)

If your region has access to Crucial P3 with similar price to Kingston NV2, I would suggest to take Crucial instead for better performance (although you probably won't see much benefits unless you transfer data a lot)

P3 is a Phison E21T + 176l QLC micron nand 

nv2 in 1TB variant have 11 different hardware versions, first they were on TLC, later they swapped to QLC.

SM2267XT/SM2269XT/phison e19T/e21T and 6 versions on TLC, and 5 on QLC ( now they are on QLC ) 

 

and that is only the 1TB variant… 

 

so both are horrible ssd, but well cheap… 

 

where are you buying from? USA?
is there no at least sn570/sn580 etc

Folks may not understand if something is bad just from listing a controller model.

 

Why is the prison e21t bad?

 

And in all honesty, does any of that impact a day to day standard user?  Or is it nit picking?

I'm buying from Canada, specially east coast, for reference my closest best buy is over an hour away so I dint have much access besides online orders

It’s Phison E25 + ddr4 + 232l TLC micron

it’s just a little worst then top of the pcie 4.0 ssd. It’s a good pcie 4.0 ssd with DRAM on TLC from reputable brand. 
 

it’s really good deal, if you want to buy 1TB, buy now. 
it will be better than any PCIe 3.0 ssd  

and yes, pcie is backwards compatible, you can use PCIe 4.0 ssd in pcie 3.0 slot ( even I do that )

Thanks a bunch, I was leaning that way for the dram and better brand but sometimes that second voice being like don't go super cheap helps haha
