Phones similar in size to S10, S23, S24... (150mm/5.9")

MS-DOS

These phones are around the 146-150mm height and around 70mm wide. Which phones would you recommend in this field beside the Samsung ones?

Also, why tf did PPI went so low after the S10? I still use the phone with a headset to watch movies while im on a plane, with the app VR Home Teather it's like having your own cinema. But the DPI has dropped by 100+ points so im afraid VR is going to suck as I will notice pixels. For reference:

S7: 577 ppi

S10: 550 ppi

S20: 563 ppi

S21: 421 ppi

S22: 425 ppi
S23: 425 ppi
S24: 416 ppi

I find this ridiculous. They are compromising on this to achieve longer battery times I assume. The thing is, this is noticeable for VR, or when zooming in etc. At the end of the day pixel density is a raw metric. There's always the annoying "just get an Oculus bro" guy. No, for my use case of watching a movie for a couple hours on a plane, I don't feel like it. It's just enough. Also, when you use these devices, half of them don't work in pitch dark. The ones that do, use the internal gyros and they suffer from drifting. While a phone will also suffer from drifting, with the VR Home Teather app you have an auto-recenter timer, so before you notice the image was displaced, it recenters and you are good. And hardware wise, my old S7 was also enough for everything I do on a phone. The problem is, it fell to the floor and now has a crack on the screen, so I cannot use it for VR.

It is what it is I guess. I will have to compromise on this, since I don't want to get a bigger phone to get an higher PPI. It has to be 150mm ish tall top. It seems there isn't that many options for this size. I was thinking about the S23 256GB.

If anyone has any suggestions here let me know.

It's for battery life, and an acknowledgement that the pixels become very hard to notice beyond a certain point. I'm writing this from a Pixel 9 with a 6.3-inch 1080p screen, and I honestly can't make out the pixels unless I'm very close. And smartphone VR seems to have fizzled out, so there's not much incentive to go to significantly higher resolutions.

Does it even matter if you can see the pixels (which I don't think you can)? Movies are either 1080p or 2160p. It's a relative blurry mess anyways.

You don't really need the higher density on a cell phone since the screen is so small. I get that you want it basically pressed up against your face, but that's not really the use case for them and they're not going to unnecessarily drain the battery and lose performance for a minuscule percentage of their user base. Also the newer phones might actually look better depending on the sub pixel layout.

Take a look at GSMArena. You can narrow down your search based on the parameters you want.

How do you know this?

For instance, S7 vs S23, the PPI difference is relevant.

Different sub pixel layouts can cause more blurry imaging. I don't know which is which, I just remember it being in a lot of reviews of phones over the years.
