Upgrading my monitor

Steve Bruce

I've recently built a new computer and wasn't going to upgrade my monitor but a family member needs a monitor so decided I'll upgrade mine and give them my current one.

So I've currently got LG 27UD69P-W 27" 4K IPS monitor.  I bought it 7 years ago so it's served me well.

I predominantly play games with a bit of admin work.

Any suggestions on a new monitor? I'm happy with 27" but prepared to go a bit bigger.

The LG monitor you mentioned is a fairly basic 4K IPS monitor by today's standards and similar models can be had for under $200.

What are your prefecences when it comes to monitors? (resolution, panel tech, curve, etc.)

Any specific features you're looking out for? (High refresh rate, special inputs, HDR, etc.)

Budget?

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Thanks for the reply.

To be honest I just want something that'll give me a good gaming experience.  I'm no expert in monitors far from it in fact.

I recently built a new computer during the prime sales and managed to upgrade from the ryzen 7 1700, 32gb ddr 3400mhz and evga 1080ti I built 7 years ago to a 7800x3d, amd 6950xt (cost only 399 on prime day in UK) and 64gb 6000mhz along with 2tb Samsung gen4 m.2

The 6950 is only a temporary card as I want to see what amd and nvidia come out with next.

I'm not sure exactly what I want/need.  Things like hdr etc are above my head. As it's primarily for gaming on a high refresh rate would be required.  I am open to suggestions.

Do you want 4K again or are you willing to go the 1440p route?

You might want to check out the following videos to figure out in which segment you want to shop.

This one is also a relevant option, but came out after the other video:

So I decided to buy the Alienware 32 4K QD-OLED Gaming Monitor - AW3225QF.  I got it for £846 in the UK which was considerably cheaper than it's competitors.

I should receive it from dell on Friday so looking forward to getting it.

I've been using it now for a few days (delivery was delayed) and I'm delighted with it.

I was playing cyberpunk in 4k in ultra/high and it was beautiful however the framerates as expected was quite low around 40fps but playable.  I didn't do any upscaling as I am still testing out my whole new system and want to do things raw for now and push the computer to it's limits.

I'm no expert on monitors, i like what I like and I'm very happy with what I'm seeing.  The colours look quite natural out of the box.  So much so I'm not even looking to calibrate it at the moment.  However I'll be watching a few films on it and playing quite a few games and I'll decide then if it needs calibration.  (no doubt some monitor experts are probably a bit triggered at the possibility of it not being calibrated)

Anyway that's my initial thoughts on this monitor. I'll update further in a few weeks if I decide to calibrate or leave it as it is.

Obviously it's a really expensive monitor, but I'd been saving up / looking for one since buying a Series X about 3 years ago and this one just had everything I wanted. 4k and 32inch was the sweet spot for me, and really like how it looks, including the (slightly) curved screen. It's also capable of more than the Xbox can deliver, so should be good for the next gaming iteration. It's got a built in anti burn-in feature, which is good, but take 6 mins or so. Considering I've got a desk setup, I wouldn't want anything bigger than this - was previously looking at the LG C1 42inch, but glad I never took the plunge on that. It also works really nicely for work, and you can switch inputs using a keyboard hotkey that you set up with the Dell Display Monitor software. Worth noting the only audio passthrough is via HDMI eARC, so you need to use one of the 2 HDMI ports for that if you want digital audio sent to a DAC etc (which is what I do), meaning you only have 2 graphics in ports (HDMI and DP).
