LMG Channel Metrics: A Fan-Made Analytics Dashboard

Hello, everyone!

I'd like to present a project I've developed that I think might interest you: a dashboard to visualize and analyze data from the Linus Media Group channels.

I often hear Linus mentioning channel metrics on the WAN Show, so for a portfolio project, I decided to create something focusing on data that I'm curious about, and hope you are too.

The dashboard includes interesting data such as:

  • Evolution of general metrics over the years

  • Comparisons between the various LMG channels

  • Statistics about the WAN Show

  • And even data showing some of the impacts caused during last year's controversy

I'd like to invite you to take a look. You can access the dashboard here: LMG Analytics Dashboard

Constructive feedback is very welcome..., and if it's not constructive, at least make it funny! Suggestions, questions, or errors you find, please share.

Some important notes:

  • The experience is optimized for desktop (doesn't work well on mobile yet)

  • There are some limitations in the public data provided by YouTube

  • I'll try to keep the data updated as much as possible

  • This is a personal project, with no official connection to LMG

I hope this tool is as interesting to you as it was gratifying for me to develop.

Best regards to all!

You clearly put a lot of work into this, but... unless you work at LMG, I don't understand why you would care about their metrics.

I mean, you're not alone, some people clearly do care, I just can't figure out why. We've had some incredibly bizarre stuff posted lately under the guise of "This will help LMG get more views." Why should it matter to us if they get more views? Why should we give them free business advice? (Not that they'd be likely to take it.) LMG isn't some obscure little struggling newbie content creator where we're just rooting for them to be able to make it. They're one of the biggest if not the biggest channels in their space, run by a multi-millionaire.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

The video upload jump from 2019 to 2020 is pretty wild.

The best way to learn something is to have a project or have an explicit goal.

I'm sure LMG has been a big influence on OP, so it's only natural having a project that's related to them would be a good motivator to embark on a project for developing skills.

It would be like if someone really loved their LTT screwdriver and they wanted to learn 3D printing. Making a bit storage as a first project would be a great start.

And of course there's the added benefit of having a dopamine rush of everyone saying your project is cool.

Hello Middcore, how are you?

Please understand, you are seeing this the wrong way.

I am starting my career, and 90% of the job openings in the field require Python and Power BI.

I really needed to do a Power BI project to use as a portfolio, it could be about LMG or any other topic. I focused on LMG because I found the idea interesting, and they have a LOT of data across all their channels.

My focus wasn’t on them, it was on me. While I practiced and learned a lot about Power BI, it was also a great study of Python, SQL, and acquiring data through an API.

Hello saintlouisbagels! Not even my own response was as good.

I recently completed an MBA, and during the course, I went through some very difficult times. One thing I learned during the course and am still using is, if you are going to do something where you naturally don’t have much motivation, try to find a way to make it interesting.

I followed this approach in my thesis, and I followed this approach in this project. Learning something new can be extremely frustrating at times, so finding a context that excites you completely changes the situation.

OK, if this was basically just an educational project, fair enough. It just seemed like you were putting it out as something for other LTT fans to constantly pore over so they could try to figure out how the channel was doing.

49 videos in 1month is insane! what did you use to create the analytics, it looks cool!

Hello jordanbuilds1.
Indeed, 49 videos is a high number, but remember they are distributed across 7 channels, and many of them are from LMGClips, meaning they are just cuts from other videos. Maybe it’s worth considering leaving them out of the data… I don’t know…
And for the charts, I used Microsoft’s Power BI, a tool that gave me a lot of frustration, but unfortunately, it is one of the most predominant in the market.

Yes!! And the craziest part is, such production in the middle of the pandemic. Interestingly, the number of views didn’t rise at the same level, and in 2021 there was even a drop in views, even though video production increased once again.

But what amazes me the most is from 2009 to 2010.

In a way, it is also that. As I said, the whole project was aimed at learning, but on a topic that sparks my interest and curiosity. And in the hope of sparking the curiosity of others as well.

I think it’s normal for us to have some curiosities like these.

@Davi Prata, since you are using official LMG logos, styles and colors, please be sure to have BIG unofficial stamps all over the page. Not like anybody is likely to find it without your context linking, but you have only mention about this being unofficial on the last page.

In past, LMG has been cool with fan projects and using their IP for personal things. But as this is publicly shared, they have asked to have it clearly marked as unofficial in past.
