Ad injection is making YouTube almost unwatchable

Real_Smoky

YouTube ad injection now injects two ads on my end, and often they are not 15 seconds, but 1 minute. I've had 2-3 minute ads, as well.

Currently, I am using Video Speed Controller for YT videos, and one side-effect of it is that I can speed up ads or skip through them. The problem is that this often breaks the player partially and I can't adjust video quality or click on the video timeline.

Do you think we will see a solution to this problem?

Buy Premium or don't use their platform?

Same here. I've used uBlock Origin for years and never had a single ad break in a video.

I'm getting ads that don't load at all and prevent the video from loading for about 30s before a skip button appear with ublock sometimes these days. I basically have to continually manually update ublock, otherwise doesn't work.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

Could this be an OS thing as I'm on Linux Mint and Debian instead of Windows?

Free with ads
pay no ads

idk man, those seem like solid choices to me.

They dont have a pay and ads option like hulu or netflix.

if you pay for ANY streaming service, I dont know why one would approach youtube in a different way.

Is this on Chrome or Firefox (or other browser?)

Before you make broad statements like that, take a look at their pricing in various regions. Neal Mohan & Sundar Pichai have gone off the deep end, gone plaid, ... The pricing does very much not match the quality and value.

Pay or deal with the ads. I pay for the family plan and have my wife and I along with my Grandma, Dad, and brother. It makes it pretty cheap. Youtube music is also a nice benefit along with being able to turn off the screen. I have Zero issues with ads being on the platform

So what region?

I'm paying $23/monthly for my family plan and I would gladly pay $50/month if I had to. Everything is on YouTube - cooking recipes, podcasts, fitness routines, music, trash TV, etc. etc. etc.

There's no reason to pay for other streaming services.

Is this something new? Haven't encountered this ever on Firefox with uBlock Origin, unless it just started happening today.. I guess I'll find out.

There was a news topic about this in June: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1573631-youtube-seemingly-preparing-to-embed-ads-directly-in-videos/

Might be they're starting to roll it out to more people now

Check Eastern European pricing, it frequently amounts to more than 1% of the annual median household income for several of those countries. That'd be like if it were around $60 / month in the US for a single person plan.

That's a pretty high cost for many families, and YouTube often contains educational materials that are mandatory to access, so you definitely put a lot of folks in a serious bind already if you make the platform de facto unusable without ad blockers or outrageous subscription. The advertisement campaigns have gotten to the point where the advert serving is downright ridiculous, you wind back 5 seconds? There you go, have another ad! Want to see that same part again, you surely must want another 1 minute advertisement! Quite bluntly, I don't even want to give money to a company that implements such practices.

YouTube charges more than Netflix and Disney Plus for content that they don't even create themselves and then pocket a significant chunk of that money. And don't forget that Google/YouTube is its own advertisement business, so it's not like a third party is running away with part of the cake. And even if you pay them, the customer support is still basically non-existent.

Google/Alphabet has entered shameless money grab territory, we're long past the "don't be evil" days.

Please don't go posting that you're willing to spend $50/month they may take you up on that

i've seen plenty of long-arse ads, but i've never seen them be unskippable.

I had a 2+ HOUR ad pop up once a couple of years ago. It was a full fight event hosted by Bas Rutten. It was bizarre. But it was skippable.

Any ad over 30 seconds is not an ad, it's someone trying view-bot their videos to inflate their algorithm presence.

If I could make a law about advertising It would be that "no ad for a physical product can be longer than 10 seconds, and the product must be available locally, immediately. No ad for a service can be longer than 10 seconds, and must be available immediately. All other brand-awareness ads may be up to 30 seconds but must only be seen once per day."

Like the most frustrating ads I see on youtube and twitch isn't what I'm seeing, but the absolute waste in ad spend of showing me ads in French that i'm going to ignore even if I recognize it's McDonalds or Tim Hortons. Clearly these ads were intended for Quebec, so whoever McDonalds and Tim Hortons is paying to advertise is dumping the ads in BC to collect their middle-man fees.

The next most-wasteful ad spend I see is when I watch something on Twitch or Youtube, and I see the EXACT, SAME, AD, 6 CONSECUTIVE, TIMES, EVERY AD BREAK. One Artist I was watching, I saw the same ad for Art Resin (A niche product already) 6 times per hour, 8 times. So this poor company had their ad spend wasted by showing me the same ad 48 times in one day.

What Youtube and Twitch needs is a "I've seen this, I'm not interested, stop showing me this product" because I REALLY do not want to keep seeing ads for cannabis products. I will never buy that garbage, and I feel insulted by Youtube that I'm seeing the ads.

Well my ad blockers are working again. I use both Ad Guard and Ghostery in Safari and it works for now. But like others said, you can pay for premium. Ive been resistant on paying for Premium but Im thinking of paying for the year $140ish this way I have no ads on any of my devices. I watch more Youtube than anything.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Does it matter if they don't create it? They still need to pay for it. On the user generated content, they pay for hosting and bandwidth, on commercial stuff like movies and TV, they pay for both hosting/bandwidth and distribution rights. They don't get to just use Cobra Kai for free.

So you either watch ads or you pay. (or be a dirty pirate)

Brave Browser works fine for me.

Data privacy is more a matter of class warfare than personal privacy.
