Should I upgrade to the iPhone 15 Plus or iPhone 16?

LagLord
  1. Both cost exactly the same for their respective 128 GB (₹79,990) variant.
  2. I want to keep whichever I buy for 4-5 years before upgrading again.
  3. I have no professional use case from my phone, I have dedicated devices for that.
  4. I just want a phone with a great camera to capture the spontaneous moments of my life. I take a lot of videos, and photos.
  5. If I buy the 15+, I miss out on AI, but is that probably going to be something significant? Or does it appear to be mostly a gimmick?
  6. What are the real benefits of the 16 over the 15/15+?

iPhone 16 should have less thermal issues than the 15 Pro, since in Apple's infinite wisdom, they gave it a titanium heatsink.

No no, I'm not considering the 15 Pro. I'm considering either the 15 Plus or the 16.

Reading comprehension hard.

Its entirely a size debate. I personally have a Z Flip 5 so my phone can fit nicely in my pocket while sitting down. Plus phones are even more ridiculous in my eyes, so I'd personally go with the 16 in this binary.

I've had 120Hz displays on my phone for the last 3 years and haven't but a couple times used it. Battery saver mode is more important than slight smoothness to the display. Coming from someone's who's desktop has used high refresh rate variable refresh rate since 2014.

Do you have an iPhone? Some recent models suck on the battery and their batteries aren't exactly large.

90 Hz doesn't necessarily pull that much on the battery, depends on implementation. If you want to save on battery so much, Apple disables little cores when you dial in to battery saving modes. In fact, they're the only manufacturer that does that.

Finger swap latency is much lower when you go beyond 60, maybe you don't notice it as much like on PC, but the difference is still somehow there.

Also, mobile gaming. Games benefit more from it, as well as some other stuff. Good phones can pick which app makes better use of it, and apply higher Hz when needed be. They keep the phone at 60 Hz in other times to save on battery.

For a while, I was using both an iPhone and android until I combined my phones with a proper dual SIM version. I also repaired iPhones for a couple years.

I also don't doom scroll social media like most people do since I don't have any but this forum which I never use on a phone, so the refresh rate of the screen just doesn't matter to me. It could be 30Hz and I would be content with it if it saved battery.

Overall, I prefer iPhones but value compactness and battery life over everything else. If Apple started making the Mini series again, I'd likely go back, but that doesn't seem to happen. For now, the Z Flip series has me locked in, over 3 years and going.

I place no value in mobile gaming. Last time I really played a mobile game was 2012.

Both options are fine, but they both have pluses and minuses. For *most people* 60hz is fine. More is better, but the vast majority of people wouldn’t even notice. Not because they are incapable of noticing, but because it just doesn’t matter to them.

I’d just wait for the 16. It’ll last 1 year longer if you end up keeping it until it’s no longer supported with OS updates, which is usually 7 years anyways. But being that the 16 comes out in a few weeks, imo, it’s worth waiting.

I say AI is a gimmick. I'd get the 15 but check if even older models aren't fit for purpose. Pretty sure an iPhone 14, 13 would serve just as well whilst saving you way more money/getting you more storage.

128GB is tiny. I have 512GB on my phone and I'm running low with give take 20GB spare 😕

Smartphones are normally 60 Hz by default, I'd imagine 30 Hz would suck quite a bit.

You're talking about compactness but the new models are already large, and they don't exactly go that long on battery. Several Androids outperform when it comes to battery life.

Mobile gaming is at large right now with CODM and the alikes.

Yes, switching to Apple is steep because guess what? Their phones and even accessories aren't always universally compatible with other stuff + COST MORE.

No, Apple does not have the highest quality hardware when it comes to the actual product. If you round up the whole thing, like the notch of the Apple, low battery, USB 2.0 etc... it frankly sucks. At least for the base model 16.

Base 16 sucks, and it factually sucks not in a sense that I root for BBK. At least get the Pro model if you care about getting a half decent phone. You're buying Apple yet you're shoehorning yourself into a limited, fixed budget which limits your choices to the crapper models.

That's why I personally have a Z Flip 5 (replaced my Z Flip 3 after 2 years when the 5 came out), its compact and I don't care about gaming.

For @LagLord, my stance is still the 16 unless you REALLY want the extra size. Personally, I think its more of a con than a benefit with how unwieldy large phones can be. Going with the 16 makes sense from a longevity standpoint over the 15 if you're considering both. You'll get at least another year of support out of it.

Brings me back to the time when I damaged my first smartphone. It was a Oneplus 6 and I only had it a few days before I dropped it while putting it in my pocket onto gravel and shattered the screen. It was the first phone I had that I couldn't properly grip either, since phones got wide enough to not be able to get a full set of fingers and thumb to properly hold the thing. I'm 5'8" 160lb with normal sized hands, so the same rule doesn't apply to my friend who's 6'4" where a plus sized phone is comparably sized.

Comparably, my Z Flip 5 is narrow enough to get a full proper grip, and I have no problem running it case-less. Big phones that are hard to grip properly force a lot of people to put bulky protective cases on them, which makes them even harder to grip. Where the whole pop socket addition comes from in my opinion.

I'm not going to bother reading the thread.

iPhones are guaranteed 5, sometimes 6, major OS updates before downgrading to just security updates.

I don't think there's any camera difference between the 15 Plus and the 16 base ? Besides yearly improvements to photo processing.

edit: the 16 has a new ultrawide camera that has autofocus (it didn't have it before...?) and you can also do Macro mode

15 Plus is 26 hours of video playback. 16 base is 22 hours, meaning the 15 Plus battery is 18% better than the 16 base.

The quality of life features of AI can amount to something in the future. Right now, it least brings iPhone up to parity with the magic eraser features that Android has. That's really nice since you don't need to rely on third party apps for removing people and unwanted objects. Also, having more RAM is always a good thing. It means less frequency of apps having to do a full refresh because you ran out of memory.

Real benefits? uhh, I do think the Camera Control is intriguing. It looks like a handy way to quickly Google things without having to open a web browser and type things in.

No one offers longer software support than apple... And no one loaths the 16, its a fine phone. It may not be the phone for you, but its one of the best phones aviaible, or at least will be once its on the market. The Pro isn't for everyone, same as the Macbook Pro not being for everyone. I could easily afford the highest spec MacBook Pro, yet I use a middle spec Air. Same with iPhone. I do use a Pro, because to me, the additional features are worth it, but those are not worth it to everyone. Plus, both the pro and non pro get the same amount of software support... iOS 18 is coming to the iphone Xs, thatll be 7 years of support which is the standard for Apple, only now being done by Google going forward (we will see if they actually do it, only time will tell).

No one also offers such low end specs on the top of the shelf base models. Cough iPhone 16 specs, all over the place. Look at what $800 of Android gets you then come up.

The base 16 is trash, it lacks things $250 phones has.

It's not even much different from the 15. Pro Max has been much better, though, cost. By the time that phone is 7 years old, it'll be no longer relevant for those updates to even matter.

No one offers such a well integrated and senseless experience. Period.

You can have qualms about iPhones, but their performance is fantastic. And the way their albeit frustrating at times ecosystem integrates and inter operates is one step away from magic. That’s what you are paying for. And to some, that isn’t a value adder, to me and many others, it is. Things literally as simple as copy pasting between my phone and my laptop is incredibly useful, and not having that would be insanely frustrating.

But it’s not for everyone, and that’s ok. But that doesn’t mean it’s trash, it’s just not what you personally want in a device.

My very 4 year old Realme does, in fact, have better audio and 90 Hz. Probably goes longer on a single charge too, even after all the years. I can run power saving mode all day long at the performance of high performance mode and never hitches up significantly in even Warzone mobile. Never heats up much, proper vapor chamber cooling. The OS, albeit not being updated anymore, is pretty straightforward and fine. As for copying files between your phone and laptop, Windows offers the same thing...

you look at the specs of a phone and what the competition offers before coming to the conclusion that a product is trash. In this case the 16 is in fact trash.

Here, a comparison, of a phone that costs half as much in third world countries with Apple's tax, yet is specced much better:

All of the arguments you make, I can make about the iPhone. I am simply saying... to each their own. There is nothing wrong with your android at all. I am glad you are happy with it. But my iphone 14 pro's battery in legendary, I can run it in power saving mode, it never hitches or runs slower, and lasts for over 8 hours of screen on time. Thats pretty incredible. It never slows down, never hitches, its faster than my computer at the things it needs to do. Running phone applications is not difficult, so it plows right through them. And an iphone 16 (non pro) will be even faster....

Windows does offer that, but it is not nearly as seemles or well integrated. The way airpods hand off between devices, how I can text from my macbook, how responsive homekit is (once you set up proper home automation and use something to tie all the non-apple certified devices together with homeassistant) is phenominal. Homekit is 100% local control, it is way more responsive than google (I use both... every single day).

If you look at the specs, for a very long time, AMD would have looked like the slower chip. AMD historically ALAWYS had lower clock speeds. But everyone knew.... AMD was actually faster back in the Athlon 64 days clock for clock. iPhones may not have the fastest core, or the most of them, but they are the most efficient, but more importantly, the software is SO much more optomized, it doesn't need to be faster with brute force, it makes up for the difference in cleaner code.

But, again, your phone is fine. If it fits your needs, thats perfect! But don't say the iphone is shit, because it just isn't. Any phone you buy today, from any of the big brands, is going to be fantastic. And to your point about older phones not being worth using.... my mom still uses her iPhone Xs, and it still works perfectly fine for her, AND it still gets security updates 7 years later because its still 100% supported by Apple with iOS 18. That is worth a lot to a lot of people, being able to keep your phone for almost a decade is a HUGE money saving advantage if you are the type of person to be totally fine with that.

No, you can not make those arguments about a company that releases 64gb phones in the realm of 256 gigers. You can not make arguments when the phone is blatantly trash on paper when compared to an Android that costs 350 Euros less, yet offers far better specs.

You can however argue about the OS being smooth, but that doesn't change the matter of fact that Apple DOES disable little cores when you run power saving mode. Androids do not, whether you notice it or not is not that relevant, because the phone actually performs worse on the background.

Sure you could use a very old phone, but like, older Androids have better specs than older iPhones. Like larger screens, higher ROM, etc etc... heck even today many Androids are far better specced than the base 16. While costing half as much. Figure.

I can make the argument, you can choose to not listen to them 🙂

You can be an iPhone hater, but if advise you at least recognize the stance you are taking, and recognize you are providing an opinion… you are not providing facts.

The iPhone is not trash, it’s a top performer by every metric (refresh rate may not be as high, but I’d argue this isn’t that important to most people, and storage isn’t as high… this is annoying, I agree). Camera, screen quality, ecosystem, software support both from Apple and third sorry devs, all superior to Android… that doesn’t mean some androids do have the upper hand in some of these areas, but none of them have the upper hand in all, where Apple is top tier in all.

Now an opinion… older iPhones still work well, and they get software support and security patches. This is immensely important. You should never, ever, used unpatched devices, regardless of the hardware they run. This makes old Androids a no go even if (which they usually don’t…) still run fast. iPhones may slow down, but they retain software support which means they are actually usable devices. And remember, it doesn’t matter the specs, it matters how well the system works. You can have an android with twice as powerful hardware, but if the software hasn’t been patched in years, or it’s not well optimized for the hardware to the point where it performs just as “slow” as a lower spaces phone, the actual hardware doesn’t actually matter. It would be like saying “I have a really powerful car, so it’s by default faster than your less powerful car”…. That isn’t how that works. You can build a way faster lower power race car than a higher power less well optimized car. Raw power is not everything, it’s the entire system as a whole that matters. I’d recommend you reevaluate your opinions.

Seems to me you got nothing figured out, since you're the one not reading into it properly. If you actually check the GT5 vs iPhone 16 comparison, you would of found out that the GT5 actually has - better screen in every way, better storage, better camera with telephoto and wide, and the OS is solid. Sure, BBK might slow delivering updates in a few years but it'll redeem to be a solid phone. More so, it costs half as much in several continents.

Apple is not top tier in any of those things I listed above, unless you're drinking their Apple Store Koolaid.

Then again, I wasn't just talking about raw power. Androids also offer other things superior compared to base model iPhone 16 with USB 2.0...

I don’t know where you get your info, especially since there are no actual benchmarks of iPhone 16 yet…. It isn’t even out. iOS 18 is still beta, I’d know, I have been running it for months.

But, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. To each their own. I have admitted androids are fine options, and provided info on both sides and why both are valid options. I’d recommend looking at the reasons why iPhones are valid for folks who value the features they provide. Until you do, you are simply an iPhone hater. Good luck out there, I’d recommend trying an iPhone at some point, might be eye opening.

I fully recognize Android is the right option for you, as it is for many others. iPhone is also correct for many people, myself included.

Thats it from me on this thread.
