Apple Just Sold Me an iPhone - iPhone 16 Launch Event

Plouffe

Apple's latest event was bittersweet. Sure we got some pretty big upgrades for the iPhone 16, but is the Pro REALLY worth the extra cash? And where are the Air Pods Pro 3, or the Apple Watch Ultra 3?

My prediction for Linus's trial:  Linus tries it, mostly likes it, but the 'fresh' iOS 18 is buggy in someway that Linus can't stand.  (Bonus points if its the AI or lack thereof).

Apple is pouring so much into AI that I can't help but think of the little QoL improvements that we just never get in software.  Not to mention that it's not even available until later ™️.

Possible video pitch: Considering the not-much-upgrade, maybe Linus uses the 15 first, then jumps to 16 once the AI matures a bit and can decide on how useful he's finding it the minor upgrade with tons of AI.

It's sad to see this. Once upon a time LTT was the channel that actually called apple out on their BS. WTF Linus? This whole event was a joke, can be summed up as: AI bullshit,  a shiny new button, and camera gimmicks. The RTX ripoff was so bad even apples cinematography couldn't make it look like anything but garbage. And the base iPhone still have 60Hz, USB 2.0, and no telephoto lens? Actually wtf were you guys thinking when you wrote this?

I decided to see how the US stacked up with data requests and its pretty much exactly what I expected.

If the intent was to question Apple's commitment to privacy, I feel like the US graph does a better job at conveying that.

This channels always calls Apple out on BS, but they're also pragmatic. Ripping on the base iPhone for having 60Hz, USB 2.0, and no Telephoto Lens is just screaming into the void. If people "just" want a phone they will get the base iPhone. They don't care about those nuances. Customer is happy and Apple is richer. If people care, then they buy the Pro phone. The 15 Pro Max was the best-selling smartphone in Q1 2024. Don't care about something that people actually don't care about.

It's like bitching about the removal of the headphone or the removal of expandable storage or the lack of small phones. In a sales sense, no one cares. Sony's and LG's feature-packed phones made no dent in overall smartphone sales, and Apple's mini phones were their worst-selling phones.

It still sucks that you have to buy the Pro models, in order to get faster than USB 2.0 speeds on the USB-C port, it makes backups take forever. Maybe in another few releases they will.

AMD Ryzen 5900X

T-Force Vulcan Z 3200mhz 2x32GB

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

WD 5400RPM 2TB

EVGA G3 750W

Corsair Carbide 300R

Arctic Fans 140mm x4 120mm x 1

But an A33 isn't a high-class phone which makes up most of Apple's customer base.

Specs: Motherboard: Asus X470-PLUS TUF gaming (Yes I know it's poor but I wasn't informed) RAM: Corsair VENGEANCE® LPX DDR4 3200Mhz CL16-18-18-36 2x8GB

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X          Case: Antec P8     PSU: Corsair RM850x                        Cooler: Antec K240 with two Noctura Industrial PPC 3000 PWM

Drives: Samsung 970 EVO plus 250GB, Micron 1100 2TB, Seagate ST4000DM000/1F2168 GPU: EVGA RTX 2080 ti Black edition

Aside from the chip, it's overall just a higher class phone.

It's not a pain point for most people, because backups via WiFi are fast enough, and backing up phones isn't to a computer isn't a common/frequent task.

Personally I use an iPhone because of how bad my first experience was with android’s operating system was in the early 2010s especially when compared to the iPod touch and iOS. Since then I have found apps that I like which are unavailable on other mobile phones operating systems.

Theres just a few really convenient things about the iPhone that you don’t necessarily get with android due to it not being an ecosystem with a few specific devices.

They're just phones, there's no reason to start throwing insults around.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Only reason Linus is switching is because iOS 18 finally has T9 dialing.

Wow, consumer is blindly happy with an inferior phone and Apple is richer so it's better? Then you come up with the argument of "this sold most, therefore it must be the best". Call of Duty outsold other games for a while, and it was still trash.

Also people wanted those smaller iPhones because they offered an alternative in the realm of big phones.

Apple fans never get it.

No, A33 is a mid-ranger, Samsung has the S, W and Z line for high-class.

Yes, it is a midranger, not gonna deny that. I'm just saying this "new" iPhone 16 doesn't even meet my standards for a midranger.

I would argue that for a lot of the 2010s while COD isn’t a game for everyone or as engaging as its contemporaries for some I feel like trash is too strong a word. The games were mostly pretty good at what it was going for. There wasn’t the level of problems that stuff like Tetris 2014 had for basically the whole time I remember COD being talked about for being trash.

Heavily doing the empathy on non-straight operators, a non-functional cheater report system which btw, in a game riddled with cheaters everywhere, and an almost overwhelmingly negative rating... COD truly is trash, but that's off topic.

The angle I'd like Linus to evaluate is: Does the iPhone and Apple ecosystem provide any security and convenience for a person who has been a victim of security issues?

Is it a better option for the owner of a business?
