Looking for a laptop for editing, have two in mind could use a little help making a decision

Hello world!

I'm looking for a laptop to pretty much exclusively do some editing on. I have narrowed down my options between just two laptops. I was hoping one of you guys could help me make the right decision! Storage doesn't really matter to me since I intend to move footage between the it and my desktop via a portable ssd/hd. The first laptop I'm cross shopping right now are the HP 17 with an intel i3, 12gb of ram, and 512gb ssd, this one is a little cheaper for me and the bigger screen would ideally make editing that much easier. The second laptop that I am considering is the Dell Inspiron 16 with an amd ryzen 5, 8gb of ram and a 256gb ssd. My real question is if whether the efficiency of the ryzen chip and smaller screen and the effects on battery life that those will have is worth the on paper seemingly worse computer? Keep in mind please that I am only editing and want to be able to render reasonably quickly and not have to worry about any hitching or frame drops in my editing software. Thank you for you input, have a blessed day!

Could you please post the full spec of those, or a link to the actual product. Just i3 or Rysen 5 tells us next to nothing.

It could also be good to know your budget and country of purchase, so that we could potentially recommend something else.

If you want me to answer, please use the quote function or tag me. I dont get notified unless you do

Thank you for your reply and willingness to help me find the best product for my use case! These are the specs of the two laptops, second one is for an ispiron 15 instead but a more powerful cpu and higher ram. I'm from the US, and have a budget of up to 600$ for a good machine. tbh this dell laptop at 450$ seems pretty compelling, especially compared to the 660$ price tag on the hp laptop

Wow, they still release laptops with resolutions below 1920x1080 ??

I would stay far away the HP laptop. You're going to have so little real estate to do any serious work.

Are you able to use eBay? For $660, it's a struggle to find any laptops that are Brand New that would provide much editing power.

Personally I would find a MacBook M1 or M2 at that budget, but I also don't know what kind of software you use.

I would also look up Dell Latitude on eBay. You could get 32GB of RAM with your budget instead of fighting for 8GB/16GB with these ones.

Here is an eBay search with some filters applied. I put the budget at $400-$670, and RAM set to 32GB

The macbook idea might not be a bad idea tbh, I do my filiming on an iphone and file transfer would certainly by easier if I kept in the ecosystem. First couple videos i made came out overexposed because of the HDR raw footage not being properly converted in my editing software. I mainly used a *non-pirated* version of permeire pro 23. thank you

Hey man, so using the link you sent I was able to find a new two choices. Both are 1920x1080 and have 32gb of ram. The only real differences the screen size (one is 14" other is 15.6"), the 14" boosts to 4,8ghz and the lets call it 16" only boosts to 4.1ghz, the 14" has a 1tb ssd and the 16" i spec'd to 512gb. Do you think the extra screen size(but same res) is worth the other advantages of the smaller laptop? Storage wasn't really a consideration but with 1tb I can get all of my programs that I need and kind of eliminate the need for an external HD ( footage is being shot @ 1080p60 ((maybe 4k60))

This definitely looks like an awesome deal at this price. It's always hard to make these kinds of purchases because you don't know if some Redditors having an issue is indicative of a design problem, or if that person just happened to buy a batch of lemons and the actual overall failure rate is like 0.0001%

thats definitely true, im pretty much sold on this last one deal seems to be too good to pass up on. Where do you work that they think 256gb is enough to download anything more than windows and chrome🤣 im going to do some more research on it before I make my final decision and when I do get it and put some time into it I'll put out a formal review for my use case and either advocate or warn against it. Thank you so much for you helping and turning me to ebay, a source I hadn't considered. Thank you brother, have a Blessed day ❤️

No problem. eBay is an overpowered resource when people get over the hurdle of not wanting a used or refurbished device.

I hear they really do make good on their ebay guarantee. I use them sometimes for work, but almost never for my own stuff. Thank you for the endorsement, I'm definitely going to start looking on there!

So I ended up finding this puppy for a screaming 270$ with free 2 days shipping! It comes tomorrow, I’ll update the post with my initial impressions on using it with my intended workload
