Probably a dumb question about PSU OCP (not a practical question just curious)

I was wondering if a GPU transient power spike of <1ms could trigger a power supplies Over Current Protection if it were to be slightly above the triggering point.

It does on some PSU, I recall that the 3080/3090 spikes triggered OCP on Corsair SF750 a few years ago (maybe they've fixed that since)

It really depends on the power supply. Shitty PSU's could absolutely trip. More quality ones should be able to handle much more than a 1ms spike.

TLDR = not all PSU's are created equal.

It's worth noting that the ATX3.0 psu specifications where introduced to deal largely with the gpu power excursions exhibited by the 3000 series.

ATX 3.0 specifications
  • Up to 3x GPU Power Excursion.
  • New 12VHPWR connector to up to 600W.
  • 12V rail can ramp to 12.2V allowing for lower voltage drops.
  • 2.5 - 5x times higher slew rates for transient loads on the +12V rail (the rate at which the output voltage and output current changes)
